Aww cmon man. The first three games of the season last year everybody on this BBS was praising Schaub. We were even comparing Schaub to Tony Romo. After he went down with some injuries and missed half the season everybody seems to have forgotten how good Schaub was? Schaub can get the job done and so can Gray. Gray's QB rating was almost identical to Rosenfel's. To get anything good you have to give something good. Every trade is a gamble. This trade IMO is a pretty safe gamble because we are not losing much and we are getting a draft pick and a good backup QB.
Hey. They're both white quarterbacks whose first and last names start with consonants. I'm having trouble thinking of ways they are NOT similar.
I sure in hell was not. People were comparing Schaub's first three Texan games to Tony Romo's first three games when he took the starting QB job in Dallas.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tony_Romo Romo is a third-generation Mexican American on his father's side. His grandfather, Ramiro Romo Sr., emigrated from Múzquiz, Coahuila, Mexico to San Antonio, Texas as an adolescent. The elder Romo cites Tony's success as an example of the possibilities afforded to immigrants in the United States: "I've always said this is a country of opportunities. If you don't get a job or an education, it's because you don't want to."[6] Romo's mother is of Polish-German descent.[7] In September 2007, Romo's father was diagnosed with prostate cancer. The younger Romo has stated that, while upset about the family crisis, he still must continue to focus on his career.[8]
It's official: Texans signed Gray today. HOUSTON TEXANS SIGN QB GRAY HOUSTON – The Houston Texans have signed unrestricted free agent QB Quinn Gray, the team announced today. Gray (6-3, 253) is entering his fifth season in the NFL after spending the previous four with the Jacksonville Jaguars. He played in a career-high eight games this past season, starting four. Gray finished the season at 2-2 as a starter. All of his starts came on the road. The former Florida A&M Rattler was signed as an undrafted free agent before the 2002 season. In 2007, Gray set career highs in passing yards (986), attempts (144), completions (80), passer rating (85.6) and touchdowns (10). Gray’s starts last season helped guide the Jaguars into the playoffs. He led Jacksonville to wins over playoff-bound Tampa Bay and Tennessee. He threw for a career-high 354 yards against New Orleans and tied a Jaguars team record for touchdowns in a game with four against Houston in the season finale. His 302 passing yards against the Texans were the second-highest total in his career and his 122.0 passer rating was the highest in his career. Gray has appeared in 11 career games. He has passed for 1,252 yards with 12 touchdowns and five interceptions. He has rushed for 84 yards including two rushing touchdowns.
Unless there is a deal already in the works involving Sage, this is a strange signing. I guess if anything, this makes a division rival weaker. Surely there's something involving Sage, right?
Not if the organization is not sure that Schaub can stay healthy, and are planning on keeping 3 QBs. If they have all 3, then if Schaub goes down with an injury you have Sage and his new backup. I would prefer to see 2 QBs, but it isn't out of the question to have 3. It seems that the salary Gray has signed to will be important as well.
May have changed in the final details, but I heard on the radio this morning that it was in the 650K neighborhood.
god, i hope this isn't their thinking... if it is, that means we basically dealt two 2s, swapped first round picks and handed $48M to rob johnson, 2.0. great. blergh.
I'm not trying to start an argument, but david carr was rob johnson 2.0. seriously, everything about him
Not really a bad idea. From what I read they were concerned from last year when Schaub got hurt, they don't want to have to pull some guy off the street to back up Sage.
mentally, yeah - but overall, schaub has much more in common with him (thus far). like johnson, schaub was a career back-up with loads of potential that a team overpaid for. like johnson, schaub is a tall, slow-footed, not very athletic QB who's a sitting duck in the pocket. like johnson, schaub (in his lone season as a starter so far) battled injuries and missed significant time. in fact, interestingly, in his four years in buffalo (after the bills gave up a 1 and 4 for him), johnson never started more than 11 games, missing 8, 14, 4 and 8 games. if the texans are having to allocate cap space of any kind for a 3rd string QB because they fear their starter can't stay healthy....
I think they're just preparing themselves to be ready to make deals on draft day. This way, if we do get an offer for Sage for a 2nd rounder, it won't kill our QB situation to do it. They don't have any positions they absolutely HAVE to take, though there are definitely spots to improve. Left Tackle - need a guy for the future, but if Mckelvin or Rodgers-Cromartie drop to 18, we can take a guy in the 3rd round (or 2nd if we trade for it). Cornerback - if the right guy falls they can get him at 18, but if not they get one in the 3rd round and let him compete with Reeves for the starting job. Running back - if for some reason Mendenhall fell they could consider taking him, especially if they get a 2nd rounder for Sage. They could then get a CB and LT in the next two rounds.
[FOX 26] BERMAN TALKS TO GRAY http://www.myfoxhouston.com/myfox/p...n=9&locale=EN-US&layoutCode=TSTY&pageId=6.1.1 Former Jacksonville quarterback Quinn Gray told FOX 26 Sports Monday he signed a one year contract to play for the Houston Texans. The Texans certainly know him well. "I can't put it into words," Gray said after signing with Houston. "This is a great opportunity. "I just needed a change of scenery," Gray said. “I’m glad I have the opportunity to move on with my career." Gray will be the Texans third quarterback behind starter Matt Schaub and back-up Sage Rosenfels. Gray signed a one-year contract that will pay him $645,000 which includes $40,000 signing bonus.
Should be interesting to see how this plays out, sounds like the Texans want to hold out for a 2nd round pick, not sure if they'll get it.
