Has anyone seen this video of this Olajuwan and Kupchak fight? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TMonqfh69J4
It was unreal.....I could not believe that they let Kupchak bait Hakeem into that...classless act. DD
It should be pointed out that at the time the Rockets were up 3-1 in the series. After a big Game 1 from Jabbar, Olajuwon destroyed the Lakers and frustrated Kareem in the next three games, and in particular shredding the Lakers in the third quarter of that game. So of course the Lakers sent their scrub Kupchak into the game to wail on Akeem and see if they could get him to lose his temper. When Sampson and Olajuwon were both hitting that was a horrible match-up for teams.
thx for posting that. I forgot how awesome the Laker Girl outfits were. They were ahead of their time.
I was only 4 at the time. <object width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/HYW6TdOSF4I&hl=en"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/HYW6TdOSF4I&hl=en" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></embed></object>
I've been trying to find a video of the Sampson vs. Sichting fight from Game 5 of the 1986 NBA Finals. Anybody seen that on YouTube?
I referenced this video in another thread for some of the younger members here so that they could see the real difference in how the NBA is then vs. now. I was a young buck during the mid 80s but I do remember the fights and the rough play but even I was shocked when I watched this video (post in another thread) and heard the announcer say that neither guy should be ejected because thats usually what happens after fisticuffs. Imagine that happening now. 3 game minimum suspension for Dream (?) or maybe much more considering how hard he was throwing and that he could have potentially hit the official. Hard to tell but certainly more the an ejection would have occurred.
if this happened now, i guess the rockets have to forfeit their next games? since all their bench players moved onto the court to fight/help.
noooo.. what would happen is that lets say all seven of the guys got off the bench. four of them would be suspened for one game, the other three will play. the following game, those three will be suspened. I think thats what they did for the whole Knicks/Heat thing.
Those were the good old days in the NBA. I remember Calvin Murphy once saying they got into scraps almost daily when he was playing. Now you touch a person and its a foul, lol.

tinman was too young. this was 1986. Akeem in only his 2nd yr destroyed the Lakers. After game 1, the rockets won 4 games in a row. Akeem averaged roughly 36 ppg in those 4. I'm pretty sure scored over 40 twice. Pat Riley said after game 5, "We didn't know he was this good." as an aside, I remember getting into an argument with DaDakota during the "Badiane can be another Hakeem" thread about how good Akeem was that early in his career. Many people thought Akeem was still just a dunker, like he was at UofH (even that wasn't true). Nope...he destroyed the defending champion Lakers, arguably the best team ever, in four straight games.
correction...i meant to say Riley's quote was after game 4. He alluded to not having an answer. Well, the vid shows Riley's answer.
He was always very good, just became unstoppable later on. Remember how much of a hothead he was in his early days? Seemd like other teams would send their bench players to give him a cheap shot so he would get tossed. Some of you yung'ns wonder why some of us still don't like the knicks?
