What do you guys think our chances are for Rookie of the Year and Most Improved Player Awards for Griffin and Cato?

Rookie of the Year : Eddie Griffin

Eddie has an uphill fight against Gasol. Especially considering Gasol is getting 13 minutes more per game. If Griffin can help spark the Rockets to a decent record then he has a chance.

His point production has been off a little lately and he had a slow start. His defense is incredible though. 7 Blocks last night and no mention on ESPN. They really suck. He is also starting to rebound with the big boys. He got a couple last night over Bradley and Howard. Gasol is due to hit his "rookie wall" and Eddie could take it. It will be hard though considering Gasol and Battier are carrying the Grizz and getting much more PT.

    Eddie Griffin

    2001-02 Statistics
    G GS MPG
    44 14 24.7

Ranks #13 in the NBA in Blocks Per Game(1.91)
Ranks #14 in the NBA in Blocks(84.0)
Ranks #9 in the NBA in Blocks Per 48 Minutes(3.71)

I saw an interesting stat on Pau Gasol. He blocks a lot of shots.

2001-02 Regular Season Rookie Leaders: Blocks Per Game
    *Player* Games Blocks BPG
    1. Pau Gasol ( Memphis Grizzlies) 45 106 2.36
    2. Eddie Griffin ( Houston Rockets) 44 84 1.91
    3. Andrei Kirilenko ( Utah Jazz) 46 86 1.87
    4. Brendan Haywood ( Washington Wizards) 31 55 1.77
    5. Tyson Chandler ( Chicago Bulls) 37 41 1.11

I didn't know he had that many. He is 7'0 though.

    As of 02/01/2002 Pau Gasol:

    2001-02 Statistics
    G GS MPG
    45 42 37.1

Ranks #13 in the NBA in Rebounds Per Game(8.9)
Ranks #7 in the NBA in Field-Goal Percentage(0.521)
Ranks #9 in the NBA in Blocks Per Game(2.36)
Ranks #12 in the NBA in Free Throw Attempts(260.0)
Ranks #11 in the NBA in Offensive Rebounds(137.0)
Ranks #13 in the NBA in Offensive Rebounds Per Game(3.0)
Ranks #19 in the NBA in Defensive Rebounds(262.0)
Ranks #12 in the NBA in Total Rebounds(399.0)
Ranks #5 in the NBA in Blocks(106.0)
Ranks #15 in the NBA in Double-doubles(18.0)

Most Improved Player Award: Kelvin Cato

Percentages and Per Game Numbers (CC.net stats)
    G MIN/G FG% FT% 3Pt% PF DQ REB/G Ast/G Stl/G Blk/G TO/G PPG

    2000-01 35 17.83 57.66 64.91 0 89 1 4.03 .31 .37 .89 .71 4.71

    2001-02 43 24.74 55.83 58.73 0 111 3 6.58 .33 .49 .91 .58 7.07

IF he can continue his AMAZING turnaround then he should take this award hands down. He has doubled his point production already. I think this guy can be a double-double every night and throw in a couple of blocks. The most improved stat of his though is HUSTLE. He is actually putting forth a buttload of effort and it is awesome.

I found a site that was "monitoring" this award. No Mentions of Cato yet though.

Unfortunately, at this rate, EG has no chance in hell of Rookie-of-the-Year Honors. Gasol's stats are much higher than EG's. If we were to make the playoffs, he'd get major consideration. But that is even highly unlikely at this point.

Honestly, our record isn't that much better than the Grizzlies, if at all, and by the end of the season, I expect us to be no more than 5 or 6 games above them. Pau Gasol deserves it. They're both incredible, but Gasol is in a better situation.

Gasol had first team experience too. Europe is better than college I think. Europe is like the last 4 teams in the NBA, that level.

I thought the media and coaches voted for Rookie of the month? I guess they changed it. Most improved player will go to Ron Artest or Wally World.

Looking at the stats Gasol did have a better month than Griffen. Everybody has to give it up to Gasol he is a hell of a player, but I still would rather have Griffen then Gasol.

There is no way Kelvin Cato could win Most Improved Player.

Gasol has the ROY, even if he does get hurt the rest of the season. The young man is great!

Griffin is awesome but Gasol is doing all around and better.

I don't think Gasol can hit a rookie wall with his stat being so high and with so many mintues, plus his team really need him.

Even if he average half of what he is getting in his stats now, he would still win the award.
