Matsui to have surgery, Astros hope to keep second baseman off DL

    Associated Press

KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- Houston Astros second baseman Kazuo Matsui will undergo surgery to repair an anal fissure on Monday in Houston.

Matsui has struggled with the health problem for much of spring training and was diagnosed with the condition earlier this week. The expected recovery time after the surgery is two weeks.

Although the season opener on March 31 is just more than two weeks away, manager Cecil Cooper wants to try and avoid placing Matsui on the disabled list.

"We'll go down to the wire and see how he's progressing," Cooper said. "We want him on the roster and active so he can play."

Matsui was signed in December to take over at second base after Craig Biggio's retirement. He had 37s RBIs and four home runs with a .288 batting average last season for Colorado.

Geoff Blum and Mark Loretta have been filling in for Matsui while he's been injured.

Also on Friday, Houston lefty Wandy Rodriguez strained a left oblique muscle and is listed as day-to-day. He threw just two pitches before leaving Houston's game against the Detroit Tigers on Friday night, which was called after one inning because of rain.

Uh, he will feel better in 2 weeks, but it depends on which type of surgery he is having.

The easy one, where they just slice it and drain it, and HOPE it doesn't come back.

or the more extensive one, where they go in, and cut out the pocket that is causing the problem inside......

Anal fissures can come back, most of the time they just do the cut and drain one, but I think it can come back in about 50% of the cases....

    And the 2nd one is a lot longer recovery time......at least 3 -4 weeks....IMHO.

And trust me, there is NOTHING funny at all about Anal Fissures....otherwise known as perirectal abcesses.

I don't think I want to know why you know so much about anal fissures.

If you extrapolate, and surmise, you would probably be right.

I thought anal fissures was caused by ghey butt zex.

Ok just kidding, but I know quite a bit about this since I did some research in a lab with a team working on this while I was back in college.

You don't necessarily need surgery anymore. There are some alternative remedies are out there, mainly the nitroglycerin treatment which has proven very effective.

Obviously the proctologist won't tell you about it since, no surgery means less money in his pocket at the end of the day.

Anal fissures are not rare if you have roids.

If you have a roid and then take a huge steak and beer dump and tear that roid open....voila!!!

My roommate in college had em all the time....then he saw a doctor. He started eating fiber every day. He recovered completely. Which was nice because sometimes there would be blood in the toilet and I was pretty sure my roomie had cancer...it was scary.

This doesnt make Matsui a bust, just give the guy some fiber pills and he should heal up.

You'd think that would be dangerous after this type of surgery.

Will somebody please just fix Kaz's anus and get him on the field?

I wanna see if this guy can play or if he is a bust.

At least Biggio's anus was intact.

Let's hope he bounces back but this does give Loretta the well deserved opportunity as a every day second base man.

Hope he don't come out of surgery and find out they operated on his leg instead.
