In keeping with the spirit of music threads, I ask this question: Who is your favorite techno/electronica/new age artist? I have several in artists like Orbital, The Orb, Enya, Loreena McKennitt, and the Chemical Brothers; however, I have to mention these 4 (in no particular order): 1) Moby - one of the true pioneers of techno, especially in the U.S., he is the reason that I started getting into this music. "Play" is one of my top 5 albums ever. 2) Massive Attack - great British band that has never gotten its due in the States, they combine techno, rock, R&B, you name it into a great sound that many people like to call "trip-hop". "Mezzanine", their last album is another one of my all-time top 5. 3) Enigma - you can't talk about this genre without mentioning Michael Cretu. Having 4 great albums plus a greatest hits album, he has spawned countless spin-offs. "Enigma 3" is my favorite CD by him. 4) Delerium - many say that they are "Enigma" copycats, but I think that they are even better. Bill Leeb and Rhys Fulber (no longer a part of the group) started out in the industrial group, Front Line Assembly, but CDs like "Semantic Spaces", "Poem", and "Karma" has made them more well-known as Delerium than FLA. One listen and you will see why. "Karma" in particular is an awesome listen from start to finish.
Enigma all the way! First heard of them thru their breakthrough 'Return To Innocence' and have been in love ever since then. Haven't gotten around to getting the greatest hits yet, but all their other stuff is GREAT!! I also like Delerium, but yea, they sound like Enigma in some ways, and Enigma takes the cake!
Kruder and Dorfmeister DJ Cam DJ Food Talvin Singh Kid Loco Ming & FS DJ Icey there is much out there its just stupid crazy!
I still like Underworld best... dubnobasswithmyheadman was one of the all time best albums. I also like Coil.
I was in the music business out in Florida in the 90's so I am kinda partial. Kimball Collins is da man. Totaly down to earth, head is still the same size a the early days. Always has a ticket for his old friends. Bad Boy Bill - best on the decks I have ever seen. A true entertainer. I don't care nuch for his type of music, but the talent is unquestionable. Sasha and digweed - Have a special place in my heart as I have seen them in so many shows. Played for my 21st BDay in '96. Had a cooler of newcastle, tons of friends. and a 12 hour set by S&D. Deelite - Put on Dewdrops in the Garden, turn down some lights, light some candles, snuggle with your girl. If you can't get laid, I have no other suggestions. Ken Jordan AKA Crystal Method - Puts on great live shows. Down to earth guys.
Alice Deejay Darude ATB They don't necessarily play my favorite techno songs (right up there nonetheless) but they all have multiple songs whereas the others usually only have one song I like so there's my list.
Just curious how "new age" got in here. George Winston is by far my favorite new age artist, but he is solo acoustic piano.
Chemical Brothers! Their new album, "Come With Us" came out the other day and it continues their streak of brilliance. Other electronica (or whatever the term is now): Air, Daft Punk, DJ Shadow, Fatboy Slim and a cool Australian group called Avalanches.
Well, I threw it in because I was afraid that not many people would be into techno or electronica music. Also, there are lots of artists who are "hybrids" of these 2 genres...techno and new age. Enigma has dance beats and plenty of bass to make you think techno but with the gregorian chants and some singing by Cretu and his wife to think new age. Same with Delerium although Delerium wasn't like that until Semantic Spaces...they were more "industrial ambient" (like on Spheres Vol 1 and Spheres Vol 2). Also, some electronica artists have done some "new-age" type stuff. Perfect example is Moby who on "Play" had a very new-age song in "Porcelain" plus the last 5 or 6 tracks could be considered new age. Another example of a "hybrid" group is Deep Forest or Waterbone. But people like John Tesh, Yanni, Michael Nyman, and Winston would not be techno. Just like Orbital, Underworld, Aphex Twin, and Prodigy would not be New Age. But you're right, Jeff, I should had put more of a qualifier on this topic. Basically, give me your favorite New Age artist if you're not into techno/electronica.
I like some electronica too. I was just curious. I like the Propellarheads, NIN and Moby. Manny, you might like the new Roland Orzibal CD. He was the singer/guitarist (main songwriter) for Tears for Fears. His new CD is very electronica-ish. It took me a couple listens to like it mainly because I am a big Tears for Fears fan (not the early Shout stuff as much as the later "Seeds of Love" stuff) and this was just so different for him. Oh, I also like the Chemical Brothers and Fatboy Slim. Plus, though he isn't electronica, he sure knows his way around a computer and I like him a lot - Beck. By the way, Manny, you should listen to Soular Grooves on KPFT in Houston every Saturday night from 9pm to midnight. They play mostly house, trip hop and electronic stuff. If you aren't in Houston, you can listen at http://www.kpft.org/
I know they've been mentioned but I love "Exit Planet Dust" from the Chemical Brothers. I also like Crystal Method and Prodigy.
Daft Punk Moby DJ Spooky PAUL OKENFOLD And my FAVORITE: FANTASTIC PLASTIC MACHINE You have to check out there sound. Very unique chill vibe to it....
Jeff: Thanks for the radio site. I will have to definitely check it out. Also thanks to Elvis Costello. I will have to get that new Chemical Brothers CD. Is it like any of their other 3 CDs or is it completely different? Some other honorable mentions include: Aphex Twin Fatboy Slim Leftfield (would be higher if they did more CDs) Air Adam F Cusco (more New Age, but sorta a hybrid) DJ Shadow Faithless Fluke Future Sound of London Peter Gabriel (For the Passion CD) Global Communication Hooverphonic Jean Michel Jarre Juno Reactor KLF Kraftwerk Robert Miles New Order NIN Gary Numan Paul Oakenfold Mike Oldfield (More New Age than techno) Portishead Tricky Utah Saints Paul Van Dyk
Listening to a new group from Sweden right now called Koop. Very groovy! Electronica sprinkled liberally with jazz! <i>This is what their website says...Leading the European school of live electronic and jazzy beats, Swedish duo Koop's US debut "Waltz For Koop" captures a sweet elegance laced with spacey electronics. The album features collaborations with Terry Callier, Earl Zinger and Cecilia Stalin that fans of Air, Kruder & Dorfmeister, Jazzanova and Thievery Corporation will dig for sure. Make sure you pick up a copy and not miss out on this album, destined to be a classic!</i> http://www.giantstep.net/records/generaterpm.asp?id=277 http://www.giantstep.net/records/generaterpm.asp?id=278
how is it that every music list we do on this site seems to miss out on the one bassist, band, singer, etc. that really should be on the list? how does this keep happening? electronically-speaking, I'm mainly into big beat. my favorite is tough because I'm tempted to go with a "group" that has only produced one album. that's dangerous because you never know if they'll keep it up. that having been said. . . UNKLE's Psyence Fiction is the coolest thing I've heard done in "electronic" music. other notables: dj shadow [1/2 of UNKLE] fatboy slim chemical brothers crystal method moby dj logic when it comes to the remix, no one does it quite like Norman Cook.
