The Rockets are on such an unbelievable run, winning 21 games in a row, that I thought it would be interesting to look at how long it's been since another team has accomplished this feat.

The last time an NBA team won this many games in a row:
    - Richard Nixon was President
    - The U.S. was still fighting in the Vietnam war
    - The development of the Space Shuttle was started
    - Intel released the world's first microprocessor

It has been over 36 years since an NBA team has won this many consecutive games. A few of the interesting things that have happened since then:
    - In 1975, Microsoft was founded
    - In 1977, Elvis died
    - In 1981, IBM introduced the very first PC
    - In 1985, Mikhail Gorbachev became the last president of the USSR
    - In 1989, the Berlin Wall fell
    - In 1989, the World Wide Web was created
    - In 1991, the Soviet Union Collapsed
    - In 1994, OJ was Arrested
    - In 1997, the first sheep was cloned
    - In 2001, the first iPod was released
    - In 2005, Youtube was created

And a few more interesting facts about this streak:
    - Every player on the Houston Rockets, except for Dikembe Mutombo, was born after the Lakers' streak.
    - There are only 15 players currently in the NBA who were born before the Lakers' 33 game run
    - The 1970-71 Milwaukee Bucks now have the 3rd longest winning streak in NBA history. That team went on to win the NBA championship, and believed that 20 straight wins was such an unbelievable accomplishment that it would likely never be broken. They had the words "20 Straight" put on their championship rings. Ironically, the Lakers surpassed that feat the following year.
    - The Rockets are currently tied for the second-longest winning streak in U.S. Professional Sports history. In major U.S. Professional sports, the longest winning streaks are: MLB - 21 by the 1880 White Stockings, and 1935 Cubs; NFL - 19 by the 2003-2004 New England Patriots; NHL - 17 by the 1992-1993 Pittsburgh Penguins

As a fan of the Rockets living in the city of Houston, I am in such awe with what is happening right now with this team. I have pinched myself a couple of times just to make sure this is all real.

    :D

I like your selection of events to represent this 36 year of span.

Obviously youtube and ipod are more significant than the assassination of John Lennon, the Faukland war, USSR's invasion of Afahgnistan, Tiananmen Square Massacre, assassination Yitzhak Rabin, death of Lady D, and 9.11, just name a few.

    Again, only because I'm irritated...

    http://bbs.clutchfans.net/showthread.php?t=144755

I just realized that it has been 37 years since something like this has happened, let alone it happened to our "crippled" Rockets team.

Historic items that "were" occuring during the last streak:

    Vietnam War was still ongoing
    Richard Nixon was President
Sanford and Son hasn't even aired
Space Shuttle was still a theory
Highest payed athlete signs for $200,000 (Hank Aaron)
    M*A*S*H* hasn't even aired

Historic events that have occured since:

    1974: Richard Nixon Resigns
    1975: Apple computer introduced
    1979: Three Mile Island
    1980: Iran Hostage Crisis
    1981: Reagan assassination attempt
    1986: Shuttle Challenger explodes
    1987: Libya debacle
    1989: Berlin wall comes down

I know there are several other things, but I posted this thread to show how truly significant this run has been. Hell, I've seen some dominant teams in my day, but I've never seen a team win twenty in a row.

Identical historical post, obviously. I stated how things were when we tied the record, and he is stating the exact same events after we tied.

Gosh, I'm sorry FFB -- I guess I just missed that thread. It is almost the same, isn't it? I guess great minds think alike. . . . maybe I read it and I forgot, I don't know, but I do apologize. This was actually an email that I made to send to a bunch of friends, and I figured I'd just post it here too.

I tried to pick more fun, pop-culture things, not so many tragic events.
