I have an old Mac G4 on OSX and am planning on getting a new MacBook Pro (man am I debating on the 15" or 17" screens). Anyway, How hard is is it to transfer files from my old computer to the new one? Particularly, iTunes stuff (playlists) as well as iPhoto, and I use Mail as my mail program so all of my saved emails and folders etc. And stuff like Firefox bookmarks etc. thanks for any info!
Would putting them together to form a network and using FTP to move things across considered Primitive to Mac people?
I never did it, but my impression is that the computer will aid you through the migration the first time you fire it up. A firewire cable may be required.
go to an Apple store and ask them. There is one in the Galleria still, no? i second this. Or better yet, buy an DVD burner. And transfer them via DVDs. You'll then have a DVD burner, which will surely come in handy for other purposes. that said, your new Mac probably already has a DVD burner.
Ha, there is no Apple Store in Savannah GA. Apparently there is a migration assistant program on newer macs. Anyone used that before?
Most of this should be trivial over a network. In fact, you should be able to just copy your user directory and move on with life.
Extremely easy. I did so when I got my macbook a year ago. Use a firewire-firewire cable, connect both systems, and it should prompt you and ask what type of files you want to send over. Evan
Yes. The first time you start up your new mac it will ask if you have an old mac you want to transfer from. Just need the FireWire cable.
