anyone catch any dead confederate this week? i've been hearing fantastic stuff about them for a few months... of course i haven't listened to them, yet. gotta grab an album of their's. and when are the black crowes supposed to play? luther dickinson (from north mississippi allstars) on lead seems to be working out splendidly. btw, my morning jacket here in houston at verizon was *****ing AMAZING... such a great band. first time playing their new songs (album to come out in june, i think) and they sounded terrific as well. hopefully i'll be in austin by tomorrow evening, raring and ready for a weekend of top-notch music.... sxsw is easily my favorite austin event/festival.
On DirectTV channel 101 they are showing some of the bands performances. I caught Dead Confederate at a day show on Wednesday. They had a super short set, around 20 minutes or so. I was surprised by how young the guys were. My day on Thursday was made when I got to see Mark Kozelek play at a church. It was amazing, especially for fans of Sun Kil Moon/Red House Painters.
Most Serene Republic is a great experimental type band. I like the Shout Out Louds as well. I am planning on catching their shows over the next two days. I keep missing out on them. But I think both bands are playing around 5-6 shows over the course of the festival.
I caught 10 shows on Thursday and 8 shows on Wednesday. So far I have been blown away by: Cut Copy The Tough Alliance Pigeon Detectives Mark Kozelek The Whip I've been trying to see Bon Iver for the past two days, but haven't had much luck since they book him at really small venues. Tapes n Tapes was decent today. Their new single from their upcoming album is gonna be huge. Other bands I'm not really sure what they are doing here include Tokyo Police Club. I like them alot but I don't think they are promoting a new album for a while. By the way, Emo's might be the crappiest venue they hold any of these events at. I don't know why they always host the biggest events at such a sorry place.
Because C3 does the booking for Emo's as well as Stubb's. While SXSW does the booking for the week, there is still quite a bit of 'bleed over' between the two companies. It's a small town in a big town body.
Can anybody tell me how it works out trying to get into places without a wristband? Can you buy a ticket or do you just have to pay at the door at places that still have space?
The Radio 3 host who is down there, Grant Lawrence, didn’t have great things to say about Emos other that that it was in the middle of the action. Today they are doing a live show from an old mansion called Caswell House, which he says is a great place. Tokyo Police Club do have a new album coming out next month, I believe. They have one song from the album up on their My Space page and a different one on their Radio 3 page. If you like experimental type music then you should also check out a band originally from Yarmouth Nova Scotia but now based in Toronto, Holy F***. If you don’t get a chance to check them out at SXSW then they’ve got about 10 songs on their Radio 3 page. They have a very gimmicky sounding name but the band is actually very good and they’ve been getting a lot of press recently. I believe Lou Reed has just said he really likes them.
yeah, you can buy tickets at the door... however, odds are not in your favor of scoring any if you're trying to catch some of the critically acclaimed acts. badges get priority, then wristbands, and if they dont reach capacity, ticket holders. the trick is to go early and buy a ticket before the big acts hit the stage. went to opal divine's around 10:30 last night when the place was still half empty just to insure i could get in to see the north mississippi all stars at 1. they started turning away kids around 12:30 right before they hit the stage.... they put on a great show, btw.
You in Austin? Saw them on METV's SXSW coverage (cable 577)... not sure if they'll be on again though
got in last night around 10:30 and went straight to opal divines to grab a ticket for NMAS before it was too late. trying to figure out what shows i'll be going to (or trying to go to) tonight.... so far it's the jim james, m. ward show at st. david's, but i'm gonna have to get there early if i want a chance at getting in i'm sure.
goddamnit! i was right there around 5 trying to get into to the m. ward, jim james show at st. david's... no luck, of course. but man, what an awesome and intimate venue. well, i'm now missing lucero at waterloo (out of sheer laziness). not really sure where i'll end up tonight. saw a great band out of minnesota earlier this afternoon at molotov's... the alarmists.
Just got back. Didn't have an armband but I got into some good shows. Holy ***** Sons and Daughters The Duke Spirit L.A. Riots The Bloody Beetroots MSTRKRFT
I was at the MSTRKRFT show last night. I got kind of bored and left halfway to catch the remaining portion of The Tough Alliance show. At most of the shows I went to on Wed-Saturday, I noticed that most people were able to get into paying cash. This hasn't been the case in previous years. Since you like electro-rock, check out Cut Copy. I saw this Australian duo two times this past week, and they are great. http://www.myspace.com/cutcopy
I got the new Cut Copy already. I've been to better MSTRKRFT shows. Not one of their best. L.A. Riots played a better set. Very different from what they normally play. People were crowd surfing whe they played a Nirvana/Nelly Furtado mash-up. They mixed Eazy E, Johnny Cash, Journey, Hot Chip, Led Zepplin, Rage Against the Machine, & it really got the crowd going.
