I'm looking into purchasing a diesel truck because I heard they have great gas mileage? Can anyone confirm that they get excellent mileage on there Ford/Dodge/GM diesel trucks? Yes this will be my first time buying an american & diesel vehicle :)

Loud engines > better gas mileage.

For some reason, diesel fuel costs a lot more than regular unleaded, even though it's less refined. Can anyone explain this to me?

They probably already hate their lives anyway.

My mom drove a big Diesel Suburban back when I was a kid. She always had to either yell into the speaker or kill the engine.

Is it worse for the environment compared to regular unleaded?

If so, it could be to discourage more harm.

    Uh, yeah, it's called biodiesel.

What kind of driving do you do, tested? Stop & go, mostly highway, do you do a lot of towing, etc....

I have a Dodge Diesel, and before that, I had two Ford F-250 Diesels.

The Dodge has better gas mileage (I average--overall--about 21 mpg, but most of them are highway miles), and a quieter cab, but it has a louder engine, so it is a bit of a wash. No vehicle is perfect, and I really like the Dodge, but when I'm done with it, I'll probably go back to Ford. I've also owned a GMC and two Toyota trucks, but they weren't diesel. All of them were good trucks (something all four companies do well). They all have their strong points.........and weak ones, but I've been most satisfied with the Ford.

The ultra low sulphur diesel fuels that are now mandated have helped to raise the cost, but I can't imagine they've made it rise this high. I have a 35 gallon tank, and I paid $3.69 a gallon the other day..........do the math. It sucks. But when I'm trailering, it sure is nice.

    own a honda...

would definately try this out. ive heard they sell kits for deisel trucks. theres a truck bed "tool box" that acts as the fuel tank. you just have to drive to restaurants and pick up their old oil from their friers. filter it. and youre good to go.

wonder what the mileage would be like.

I had a 95 powerstroke (7.3 liter, they should have never changed it)...one of the best diesel engine put in trucks (my opinion).

It definitely got better gas mileage than comporable gas trucks.

They arent as loud as they use to be, so don't let that be a concern.

My dad does the RV'ing thing, and he has owned both big gasoline and big diesel trucks. The fuel-mileage difference is pretty small without a load, and with diesel more than gasoline pretty much year-round now, if you don't tow, it doesn't make economic sense to buy a big diesel. Pulling a trailer, or even with a heavy load in the bed, a diesel will get a lot better fuel mileage than a gasoline motor.

(Chevy is supposed to be bringing over a diesel from Europe for their light-duty trucks. That should be a much better option if you just need a truck and want something with good fuel-mileage. I don't know when that is coming.)

true to a certain point, but diesels can also be considered more reliable and have longer lives.

I have a Dodge 2500 CTD that is chipped that I upgraded to from a similar gas version.

Mileage is a little better (about 18 vs. 15 city ) + 3mpg for highway.

Towing is the main difference - the turbo diesel is rated to 13,500 and up to 4tons you don't know the trailer is there.

    I haul an rv @ 6000lbs, backhoe @ 10,000lbs, dump trailer @ 8000lbs, jetboat @ 2000lbs, and loaded stock trailer @ 5000lbs.

    ----

In the gas rig with a heavy load I dropped to ~10mpg and felt the load, in the mountains (rocky & pacific) with climb and altitude gas dropped below 8mpg and I was in 3rd gear at best.

Diesel under heavy load on the highway - mpg ~ 17 in overdrive
steep mountain climbs 4th gear ~ 15mpg (passing cars like they are stopped)

    ----

I just passed 100k miles so I am just broken in and should go at least another 150k plus

My dads diesel is still going strong at almost 300k and he tows much larger trailers than I do.
