Question for all of your Mac users out there. My PoweMac G4 computer at home is having startup problems. When I turn it on, it boots up and gets to the apple icon screen and the screen flicks a number of times and then the computer shuts down. This happend this morning. Then later on I was able to get back on fine and now it is happening again. Any mac useres experience this or have any advice on what it might be or some remedies? thanks in advance!!
I would make an appointment with the nearest Genius Bar (Apple Store) and bring it to them tonight. Doesn't sound like something easily correctable at home, though I could be wrong. Smells like a hardware glitch. Evan
Is this Mac OSX? You might be able to boot from the installation disc and run the utilities on there and see if it fixes it. If you can get it up and running again on more time, you need to install a program called applejack. It helps in fixing a lot of issues. If you install it, you have to reboot holding apple+s. It will boot up in in a dos prompt-esque screen and type in: applejack auto restart It will attempt to fix many issues including permissions which can cause all kinds of problems. Another thing you can try is to boot from the installation CD and re-install the system but change it to where it will Archive and Install. That way it keeps everything of yours plus all your settings but will put a fresh system on it. Of course, this all is assuming you are running Mac OSX.
you might need to change the hard drive, happened to my macbook, i had to bring it to the service and changed the hard drive to a new one.
Guys thanks a bunch for your answers. Mogrod, I do have OS X, I will give your applejack suggestion a try when I get home. The mac is 8 years old. I want to get it working again.....but in addition to that, probably this is a sign I need to get a new computer. Keep the suggestions coming if anyone else has any ideas about my screen blinking problem and computer shutting down. And on aother note, if I was to look into a new computer, I am thinking 17" MacBook Pro laptop, where is the best/cheapest place to get one of those. Thanks to all for the help and suggestions!!!!!!
I would suspect hard disk failure first. Run the disk utility application to make sure that you HD is OK. The second thing may be the PRAM battery. If you set the system to sync time with the apple server, you may not notice the loss of the time setting.
Repair disk permissions reset the pram (Alt apple p r) as it is starting up I'd bring it in just to be safe as well
I just bought my wife a Macbook from Macmall.com. I think they have pretty good prices and they have the whole Bill Me Later deal, which is what I did and paying it all off when I get my tax return in. They recently came out with new models, so they may still have some of the last models at reduced prices.
I just wanted to come back to this thread and thank everyone for their suggestions. Mogrod, the AppleJack solution you mentioned, in particular was really helpful!! I was able to get my machine back on which was a huge plus. Thanks again!!!!
