Starring: U2 - Ireland Paul McCartney - England Marc Anthony - USA Mary J. Blige - USA Mariah Carey - USA Barenaked Ladies - Canada
"Super Bown" wasn't that a porno movie? I guess with the Events of Sept. 11th Its the will of God That The "Patriots" win the Super Bowl.
I think it's insulting that U2 and Paul McCartney have to share the stage with a bunch of absolute ****. What is this, the WWF of rock and roll? Integrity vs Schlock?
aww, The Yankees won Everything else including The Civil War, He wanted to let some fluke expansion team rise to the top with quality free agents and return to suckiness within 2 seasons . (Wait that was The Marlins)
Well, Barenaked Ladies aren't great and I've never liked Mariah Carey, but Mary J. Blige is a pretty well-established rap artist and Marc Anthony is the KING of salsa. The guy's salsa recordings are really incredible even if his Americanized dance stuff is crappy. I love salsa music.
See, shows you how much I know about "urban" music! I really need to know more than I do. I'm an idiot.
Well, I know who all six of the artists are. I just don't think there's a reasonable comparison between McCartney and U2 and the rest of them. I used the word "integrity" (certainly a loaded one) intentionally. I think McCartney and U2 are artists. I think the other four are sugarfree bubblegum pop acts more concerned with choreographed dance steps and chart status than true artistic expression.
Have you heard any Marc Anthony stuff in Spanish? Some of that stuff is really incredible. His English albums have been less than interesting but his salsa is as good as any salsa music out there. It is some of the most complex and challenging music in the world. I'm with you on most, but we'll have to disagree on this one. The fact that he has been pigeon-holed into a dance music format in America is a result of the fact that Americans have little interest in traditional Latin music and he wants to have a successful career in the US. He is from New York after all.
While I prefer McCartney to the others, you do realize that qualifying something as art or not is a very subjective thing. Where do you take the authority from to qualify one or two of them as artists and saying the others are without "true" artistic expression?
I'm a U2 fan and I feel like they are milking the spotlight big time. I know they have paid their dues over the past 20 years and have produced some of the greatest albums ever, but doing the Super Bowl halftime with this collection (no offense but this is usually not U2's style) is just ugh... I don't think they feel insulted being on stage with pop/r&b artists. They're getting paid.
BK--are you sure you've listened to the radio in the past few years? Mary J. Blige has had a lot of critical acclaim for an R&B artist over her career, and until recently hasn't been much of a pop act. And I havn't seen the Barenaked Ladies or Marc Anthony do much dancing, either... Mariah Carey is really the only joke up on the stage. She just got cut from her label and her last cd hasn't even sold 500,000 copies...I really would like to know who her agent his, because he's pretty good...
