What are some bands that you really got into past their "prime"? I.e. you either didn't get them when they were popular or never even heard about them until they were old news? I'm not talking about discovering classic artists like Led Zepplin or Jimi Hendrix. I think everyone goes through a phase where they get into those bands. I'm more interested in newer bands. First for me would have to be Jeff Buckley and, I'm embarrassed to say, it was American Idol who introduced me to him. Some guy did a cover of Hallelujah and Simon said it was one of his favorite songs. I had already read Neil Peart from Rush raving on and on about him so I finally checked him out via Rhapsody and I'm totally blown away. Massive Attack - A friend gave me a Portishead CD which introduced me to triphop. From there I got into Morcheeba and Massive Attack about a five years after hearing this same friend talking about how great they were with a stereo speaker salesman!
I got into the Smiths in '88...they broke up in '87 Joy Division became New Order when their lead singer died in '80 I think...I got into them in '88 as well. I really just discovered Old Elvis Costello about 5yrs ago..Love his old stuff.
Most of the bands I listen to are past their prime. So I'd say a band that isn't past their prime that I think is great is the great Super Chikan and the Fighting Cocks. He is a modern blues legend on the level of Muddy Waters and B. B. King. He is no joke. He plays like a souped up Jimmy Reed. Their is not too many people that can hang with this guy. His blues music is not the same old boring blues that a lot of people play. Honorable Mention would be: Alvin Youngblood Hart Back Door Slam These guys are good.
Take a listen to some super chikan! <object width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/uQxzvWCGWas"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/uQxzvWCGWas" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></embed></object>
www.myspace.com/jitarage i just made some music. i am a noob. but seriously though... like B.O.C., Ten Years After, and all of those old school rock, metal, and blues band. i guess in a way, the popular music junk today is a good thing. forced me to look in the past to find good music. i didn't move to US until i was like in high school. so didn't know about those good bands.
I always brushed off TOOL when I heard them, but about 3-4 years ago I actually heard "Anemia" and I was blown away. One of my favorite albums ever.
You're not the only one. I read some article recently that said Buckley's version was one of the highest sellers on iTunes this past week or something. Looks like American Idol has the same effect Oprah's book club has on book sales. I'm just now getting into Joy Division...I don't know if I was born when they ended but I definitely should have gotten into them sooner.
