McGrady in the high post

Anyone see the Rockets offense start to mianly put Tracy in the high post? I know in the first game without Yao, people here were complaining about the Rockets using mostly P-n-R and getting away from Adelman's offense. Now it seems he's put Tracy in the high post and lets him go to work - genius.

McGrady is a better mid-range shooter and thus starts a lot closer to the rim - and in the HP he can shoot, pumpfake, and drive - for a layup or dish off to one of our big finishers (ScoLandry). I think TMac in the high post makes this offense much more efficient, and opens up passing lanes for all other players. With McGrady's vision, that's pretty scary.

    Well done, Rick.

Good observation. It reminds me a bit of how the Spurs use Duncan. Tracy is even a better passer off double teams than Duncan.

Since the Rockets use some triangle offense, its somewhat similar to what Kobe does in LA and what MJ did in Chicago.

McGrady in the high post should have been done from the start. With Tmac in the high post, this is the closest the Rockets will get to emulate Adelman's Kings offense.

McGrady is not only a great passer, he's a good decision maker. He can thread the needle very well. And if the pass is not there, he can get by his defender, and he is tall and enough of an elevator to get a jumpshot off.

One thing that Tmac brings differently to the high post is his ability to post up in the high post. Once all options are covered, and he doesn't want to shoot, he can simply turn his back to the basket. In that position, he has yet another list of options to execute.

With the guard in the high post making decisions, the power forward and center have to be agile and athletic enough to cut and move with the ball. Scola and Landry both fit the bill VERY well. Scola and Landry also finish around the basket VERY well. Landry is a powerful finisher, while Scola is a crafty finisher.

Then, you have the Battier, Head, Alston, Jackson, and sometimes Novak on the perimeter waiting for a wide open jumpshot or 3.

Besides pick and roll, I think Tmac in the high post should be THE go-to formation. Great point by LongTimeFan

The way it ran in Sacto, Webb and Divac could stand out at the 3 line. Yao can't, and thats why it wasnt the same as it is here. Without being able to pull the opposing big man out of the lane, it makes T-Mac's options at the high post more difficult. Though, I think it should be looked at next season as a viable set to run while Yao is sitting down.

TMac in the high post looked very good in their last game. I'd much rather run this at the end of games than TMac running a pick and roll from the 3 point line.

Him in the High Post is ineffective if Yao is in the game though.

I think this is a great point and is one of the most important factors to the Rockets ability to continue to play so well since the Big Guy's injury. This is an offense that Adelman has been executing with his former teams for years, and we are fortunate to have have two Super Rookies that were able to gel into it so quickly.

So considering that in Adelman's offense it is the Center who takes the high post is Tmac a Point Forward, a Point Center or a Forward Center?
