I think it does not matter (1) what Dirk's intention was when he committed this dangerous foul in the Monday's game against Utah, or (2) whether this was considered at the time a flagrant-1 or flagrant-2 foul, the most important fact is that this kind of extremely dangerous and deliberate foul can cause very serious injuries to other players on the court and therefore should be completely banned from this league. My view is that if any player commits such a dangerous foul during a game, his penalty should be a (3+n)-game suspension, where n equals the number of games that the other (fouled) player misses due to any injuries caused by this foul.

I don't want him suspended. I want to beat them at their full strength. Bring it.

does intent really matter that much? to me, it seems like the purpose of the rule is to prevent players from injuring each other with unnecessary contact. its obviously easier to suspend someone if they show clear intent by shouting 'im going to hurt you' before clotheslining them to the ground. but the outcome would be exactly the same if a player, with no malicious intent, happens to be out of control, and ends up throwing the player to the ground. the rational for punishing the second, 'unintentional' action is that there are some plays players should never even attempt to make because the danger is so great that the play simply isn't warranted.

dirk recklessly threw his arm out and caught kirilenko on the neck. whether or not he meant to injure kirilenko is moot, because dirk knew he was out of control and should have known there was a significant risk of injury in that situation. players shouldn't get a free pass for reckless endangerment. its like if some idiot tries to prevent someone on a fastbreak from getting the easy basket even though he has no real shot, tries to make a play on the ball but is unable to control himself and ends up undercutting the other player while in midair. just because the guy is too stupid to know he has no real chance of stopping the play doesn't mean he should get off scott-free. maybe there should be an intermediate penalty for reckless endangerment, but since there isn't, the only way to protect players and prevent this kind of unnecessarily dangerous contact is with the flagrant-2 suspension.

that said, dirk should be suspended, both on precedent and on the sheer need to prevent players from making these kind of unnecessary 'attempts' to make a play, but he probably won't be.

Eh, 3+n wouldn't work. Let's say that wasn't AK, but the 10th man on their bench. I'll never be considered the smartest person in the world, but I'm thinking 10th man would automatically miss more games than AK if that scenario. It is very unclean, unsportsmanlike basketball that cannot be tolerated....but you have to admit Dirk could have done much worse.

Great points. We can argue about this all day, but I haven't seen anyone actually bring up the rule for F1 vs F2. I'd look, but I gotta go. Go Rockets!

LOL, *IF* Dirk is suspended, I can see the headlines now:

"Red Hot Rockets Beat Undermanned Mavs".

Never mind the fact that we're w/o Yao. I'm sure we'll see a mention of Yao's injury, but there will be 2 paragraphs on Dirk's suspension.

Utah was kicking ass until that play and he turned a blowout into a close game. Dallas deserves to lose Dirk.

i might feel differently if that was one of our players but at worst he should have been kicked from that game. i don't think a suspension for another game is warranted.

Yeah I hope I'm dead wrong about this but why does everyone think we're going to beat their asses?

Now I don't mind playing them at full strength but I don't think we're going to win. I hope we do.

I hope he's not suspended so that I want to see their full power playing against us to see where our team at the moment without Yao stack up against them.

Even if the person is the 10th man on the bench, one can still get an independent (or league assigned) doctor to check and determine if the injured player is fully recovered and ready to play, and of course the player that commits such a dangerous foul should be responsible for the doctor’s examination fees in this case. The idea here is to use the penalty to discourage anyone from committing this kind of very dangerous and highly unsportsmanlike acts in the future.

IMO, that play deserves a game suspension. He didn't just hit the guy to make him miss the easy shot, he pulled him down as he went up so he slammed on the ground.

I wouldn't be upset at all if Dirk missed the game, cause we aren't at full strength either.

I don't think Dirk intended to choke slam AK, but he clearly didn't want AK to take that shot no matter what. Easily a suspension by today's rules, as well as it should be. Risky, dangerous moves like that can't be allowed.

I do wish we could play the Mavs at full strength to see how we match up. I know, I know, we don't have Yao. But come playoff time, we still won't have Yao but they will have Dirk (if they still make it).

When does the NBA suspend players? Doesn't the team usually get a call at some ungodly hour just before tip-off? That would make things that much sweeter. Dirk suited up in his Princess Maverick uniform, just to be told to go to hs room and post more drunken pictures of him and his boyfriend Steve Nash all over the Internet.

And that, my friends, was the extent of my randomness for the day.

    Happy Wednesday.

Dirk should be suspended for consistency's sake.
