so i just got a warning, i think from warner brothers, about copy right infringement last year. i called charter and they said not to worry about it, unless you keep on getting more warnings. this is the first warning i got. i don't used file sharing at all. i don't even remember why i got this warning. i own all the movies and music on my computer legally. but i am worried that my internet usage is being monitor, which i didn't know. anyone else got warnings before? i absolutely have no file sharing program or illegal stuff on my computer. thanks.
I would be worried about getting a DMCA notice. As long as you don't do it again, your fine, but if you weren't doing anything, make sure no one is stealing your internet or using your IP. And yes, you can get tracked if you use bittorrent or even something as seemingly mundane as posting rapidshare links on a BBS. From a copyright holder's side, the DMCA is really useful. I use it in my job and I've shutdown a lot of places with it. Just a few weeks ago, I gave someone notice, they took everything down, and then put it all back up a month later. I went straight to their ISP with a DMCA notice and they terminated his account for violating the terms of service agreement.
i don't file share at all. but i guess they said that i watched a couple of movies online last year. i haven't done it since, not planning on doing it again. i thought if it's online then it wouldn't be my problem. i thought that they only track people who share files. i guess charter said it's only a warning. they only terminate people who get repeated warnings. so i guess i am not in a big trouble. i don't have any illegal files on my computer anyways, no file sharing program. just that first time i got this, so i was really surprised that i got it given so many people actually keep a large collection of illegal stuff and they get away with everything.
umm...as far as i know, you cant get in trouble for watching movies online..you arent sharing them...can someone clarify?
sure, but not for music or movies. For books. The kind where the royalties actually go to the writers and where the downloaders are too lazy to go to the library or bookstore if they want to read it for free. I believe its within the rights of the copyright holders to decide how to protect their material and to what extent. If I know someone is making money off donations or advertising by offering free material and the author wants that conduct stopped, I'll stop it.
I never understood how someone could read a book online. It seems very difficult and cumbersome to do so. Unless they took that online version and printed it. But the printing costs would amount to usually being able to to buy the book at a second hand price. Just seems to inconvenient to read books online. For example, I can't imagine someone reading Harry Potter online. On the other hand I do like how Google has digitized alot of books. It is good for quick reference.
You can't even get in trouble for downloading movies, as long as you don't share it is not illegal to download anything.
that means they fed the OP BS than. like others have said, if you have wireless make sure someone isnt using it.
Get a new isp....Privacy is the most important thing I look at when considering for a ISP. prior to getting a 1month free trial for Shaw cable 10mbit, i asked stuff like monitor connection, filter connection, fine for over-download, etc. TBH, I downloaded like an avg of 25-30 gigs a day with this 10mbit 1 month free. I broken my own download record (in 24hours) a fews days ago with like 45 gigs downloaded (within 24 hours). I'm only at around 20 something gigs for todays, will do my massive download later on at night. My new 500 gigs hard drive which I got like 3 weeks ago is down to 20 gigs... Typically, a warning letter is nothing serious, is just a warning. But you might wanna phone up your isp asking how did they track you down.
ya, i called them. they said they know everything. i am surprised that i have no privacy online. i don't even have file sharing programs on my computer. i usually buy movies anyways. i guess i was curious last year or something. i am over the curiosity phase now, so i won't get warnings again. but still, it's surprising to me. oh well.
i used to have wireless, but not anymore. i read the warning letter again. it may be a scare tactic. it says that if you get REPEATED warnings, charter may terminate your account. so... i guess i will just stick to hulu.com i hope that's legal
Well, time to go check up on other isp (where they do have some respect for privacy). or use proxy (anonymous, and high anonymous ones).
