i looked at each of the western conference teams remaining schedule and made two assumptions...

the remaining playoff teams/contenders should be favored in all their home games.

also I would think they would be likely to be favored in their road games against under .500 teams.

so therefore I counted each teams remaining ROAD games against >.500 teams as the only expected losses. Here's each teams remaining games on road against >.500

    SAS 9
    LAL 6
    NOH 8
    UTA 5
    PHX 8
    DAL 7
    HOU 8
    GSW 8
    DEN 8
    POR 5

if each of these Losses are added to the final standing the final standings would be such....

    LAL 58-24
    SAS 56-26
    NOH 56-26
    UTA 55-27
    PHX 55-27
    DAL 55-27
    HOU 54-28
    GSW 52-30

    DEN 51-31
    POR 49-33

i'm too lazy to figure out who gets higher seed between spurs/NO and between PHX/DAL. But suffice it to say that I think the Rockets have a good chance at playoffs. And one unexpected Road win could possibly even get us the number 5 seed :)

Also Denver could win 50 games and still miss the playoffs... that would suck.

Wow...those numbers are somewhat similar to the records I chose in this playoff predictor thread earlier today...

The Rockets have a great shot, as long as they can stay healthy and motivated. And if they get some separation from the 9th seed team, they can't lose their edge. Every game is so important, because 3 of our last 4 games are against Phoenix, Utah, and Denver. We could go from 5th to 9th just like that, right in the last week.

Wow Denver must be looking at that thinking "If we don't be Houston to start the week our season is over". Expect Sunday's game against Denver to be like the 7th game in the playoffs. It won't be about who is better but rather who wants it more. Denver will play as if their life depended on it. Let's hope the Rockets come prepared for a grind it out, leave the blood on the floor showdown! If we beat Denver Sunday I like our playoff chances.

I think Rockets with their faster uptempo game now have a chance to win a lot more games. With Yao in, the game is slowed down. Sure, we're missing a big key to our interior defense and offense. But that gives other players a chance to drive without getting too much attention in the post.

Not if they beat us on Sunday. They will gain a full game if that happens. Our schedule is pretty difficult too.

I think the game is important on Sunday, but not a huge game that will come with about 8 games to go. While Denver is close behind us, you never know when they will decide to let down to a bad team. They almost gave a game to the Clippers last night. With the Rockets defense, you pretty much know what effort you'll get on that end every night, even if the ball isn't going in the basket. The Rockets give themselves a chance to win every game, while the Nuggets don't. If we lose to the Nugs, we'll beat the Pacers, and I see Denver going on a losing skid. We'll take the 7th or 8th seed, battling with the Warriors for better position.

    I hope.

If they lose all 5 of those games, they're done. But their schedule lightens up after that, while the Rockets have an equally brutal 5-game stretch in mid-March.
