Some people have argued that Rudy is already a better player than Battier in year 2 of the trade. Those who say so have often been focused on the fantasy stats Rudy puts up.

Well, this is what they put each put up in the head to head matchups in the 4 games between the Grizz and the Rockets this season. I think it's interesting:

    Minutes: 34
    FG%: 36.7 (15.5 Attempts)
    3pt% 33.3
    FT% 50.0 (1.5 Attempts)
    Rebounds 5.0
    Assists 1.0
    TO 2.0
    STL 1.0
    Blocked Shots 1.0
    PF: 3.8
    Points: 12.8

    Minutes: 37
    FG%: 53.3 (7.5 attempts)
    3pt% 46.7
    FT% 71.4 (1.8 attempts)
    Rebounds 5.3
    Assists 1.8
    TO 1.3
    STL 1.3
    Blocked Shots 2.0
    PF: 2.5
    Points: 11.0

I would assume Shane has the fewer shot attempts?

I think Landry this season showed why Gay could've been very valuable for us. Gay's basically a more polished version of Landry. Great finisher around the basket with some good mid-range game.

But since now we have Landry, it really lessens the pain of the trade for me personally. Because Gay and Landry are pretty redundant.

Surely you're not kidding? The FGA is a dead giveaway. When was the last time Shane shot 15 times in a game for us?

To anyone that understands the game, Shane is a much better team player than Gay.....it is not even close.

No need to guess. If you've watched any of those games you'll know how Shane has completely shut Rudy Gay down everytime they meet.

Rudy Gay is still young and can become a All-star to Superstar type player.

Other than them both being good dunkers, they are completely different.

What does this sentence even mean? That Rudy Gay will end up somewhere between Jamaal Magloire and Kobe Bryant?

Agree. I really don't see Landry and Gay has much in common.

    Totally Agree..

Gay might make the All star team, but he won't amount to anything special.

Look at the 3pt and charity-line percentages, that will tell you where Shane is

What does head to head have anything to do with how good of a player each is?

Rudy happens to have performed poorly against the Rockets in this season's series. That is why someone would like to single out this head-to-head series for comparison. :D

The sample is partial in nature.

I am a Battier guy myself. He is so important to the team. The kind of player championship teams need to have. But the painful part of the Gay/Battier trade is that we weren't adequately compensated for the deal. Battier should have come at a discount while Gay's value should have been a premium. The Rockets deserved at least a draft pick.

I am not as negative about the trade as some people here. But you can't just use head to head stats to say this player is better than that player. You have to look at the bigger picture and ask which player is more valuable to the team.

Would Memphis be better off with Battier or with Gay?
Would Houston be better off with Battier or with Gay?

There is no doubt that Battier is a more efficient player. And he does many things better than Gay, except scoring and athleticism. So I agree that Shane is a better player at this point. The thing is, Shane is what he is, but Gay still has not reached his ceiling yet. So Gay might very well become a better, maybe much better, player than Battier. We'll see.

IMO it was a great trade for us. Many forget Grizz had to take on Stromile's contract with Gay in the trade. We got rid of a bad contract which gives us flexibility to make a splash next summer once Bobby Jax contract is up. I don't think Rox would have done this trade without getting rid of Swift.
