Why does Kenny Smith make such ignorant statements?

Exactly. Sounded like Charles has not seen the Rockets play since last season.

I agree...Barkley is pimping him all that time....I use to respect him at the beginning but you're right, his opinion completely parallel's Charles. It's funny at times during the show, he has a inferiority complex to Barkley and Magic because he was not as great a player and hall of famer. I think this intimidation affects his opinions.

I'm still trying to figure out what the hell Kenny was talking about on the Jim Rome show back in '98 when he was describing the NBA lockout.

AMEN! If you are so fragile that all it takes to set them off is something said by one of the TV talking heads, then the problem lies not with them for saying it but with you for WATCHING them say it. You don't like what these guys have to say about the Rockets? Here's a suggestion: DON'T WATCH THEIR SHOW! Go watch the Discovery Channel, QVC or the Playboy Channel...

Following the digression a little bit. I didn't hear Kenny's "analysis" but this puzzled me as well. Devin Harris mentioned how Avery Johnson was a control freak and he was glad to have a new coach who was willing to give him a little freedom on the offensive end. IMO, last night showed exactly why the Mavericks are doomed to fail this season: you don't trade away a dynamic young talent like Harris for a veteran point guard like Kidd expecting him to bring leadership and playmaking ability, and then hit him with a vote of no-confidence in the final two possessions. Ironically, if Devin Harris had been the one to take that final drive instead of Terry, he would've probably gotten an and1 instead of getting blocked.

If he OR Charles were intelligent commentators who made well thought-out researched comments based on solid evidence and argued in a sound manner......they would be like every other commentator. They are liked because they make stupid, spur of the moment, top of their head type comments which most find entertaining and funny. I know I do. Every now and again one of them will say something harshly true, but they are valued more for their personality than their expertise.

I've been a Rockets fan at least as long as Tinman...but I agree Kenny and Charles, though extremely funny, are not particularly insightful, much less accurate, when it comes to basketball analysis.

By the way, for those that weren't around or were too young, Kenny Smith was NOT a great point guard by any stretch of the imagination. Kenny did three things well:

    1. good, occsionally great, 3pt shooter
    2. good free throw shooter (shot in the low to mid 80% as I recall)
    3. good at passing the ball the Hakeem

Who remembers Derek Harper eating Kenny alive all series long in the Finals? I do. He was Harper's b**** the entire series. Granted, hand-checking was legal then, but Kenny was barely able to get it across the timeline vs. Harper. Fortunately, we had Cassell.

Realistically, Kenny was a really average PG, who ironically looked much better because he played with Dream.

Smith did have some great games, and it seemed like at least one game per series he would have a monster 3pt shooting game (like gm 1 vs. Orlando), but he was otherwise pretty average.

Was he better than Rafer? Well, yeah, but is that saying much?

Dude, seriously. How do you expect anyone to have an intelligent conversation with you if you have the reading comprehension of a 5 year-old? My point was that hardcore fans watch every single game for THEIR team only, and that they are most up to date on the ongoings of the team. They also know their team's weaknesses and strengths better, because they consistently read local analysts and listen to local sports show hosts. Charles and Kenny, therefore, cannot offer the same level of insight as the hardcore local fans BECAUSE they can't watch every game every night. SHEESH. Do I have to spell everything out for you?

You are too overprotective of your old skoo players Tinman. NBA analysts are wrong all the time. Remember Charles kissing a dokeys butt?

kenny's just bitter cuz he wasn't half the player...wait not even a third of a player that TMAC is. kenny rode Dream's nuts to two rings. His D sucked. Though a good 3 point shooter was inconsistent in games and unclutch, and could not drive in the lane. I'd rather have rafer than Kenny.

    Preach on Brother!

If they don't like TNT Inside the NBA, tell their moms to turn the channel back to the Disney Channel which they should be watching anyways.

I agree...except I doubt it's any resentment. Kenny and Charles aren't real analysts. They aren't like the NBA beat reporters who watch a game or two every night, and knows the nuances of every team. These guys get paid because they used to be in the NBA and are entertaining on camera. The only games Kenny and Charles watch are the games they are covering on TNT night...maybe 1-2 games a week. It's just like the mainstream sports reporters who cover every sport. They won't know jack about the Rockets except for scouting reports from 2 years ago...just like Kenny and Charles.

What it boils down to is that if you're a Tee Oh Eff then any criticism of McGrady has to be attacked and invalidated. Never mind that in this case you're talking about a guy with two championship rings and another guy who's a legitimate Hall of Famer.

And if you add in Magic you're talking about a guy with a bunch of championships, a Hall of Famer, one of the fifty best players to ever play the game and one of the best point guards ever.

it's not that. i wouldn't even post if they said tmac is not a winner, he's injury-prone, he's soft at times or even mentally weak. u can't argue those things b/c he hasn't won.

what they said last night is a complete contradiction to what they said earlier or last yr. it seems like they form opinions on what's hot right now and doesn't do any research.

but the point of that show is not about basketball anyways, it's about humor and they do it the best.

Really? What do you think Rafer does better than Kenny???

    Better shooter: Kenny
    Better FT shooter: Kenny
    Better clutch shooter: Kenny
Capable of throwing an inbounds pass: Kenny
Floor general: Maybe Rafer is better here? I'm not sure about that
Better driver: Rafer (but keep in mind how "well" he historically finishes, the last couple months not withstanding)
    Flashier: Rafer

What else does Rafer do better than Kenny did??

kenny is better than rafer definitely. but kenny also has some dude named cassell as a rookie already was mad clutch and def. challenged kenny.

rafer can suck and still would be starting. i think if rafer had some challenge ike he did this yr, he would be much better.

For as good of a shooter that Kenny was he sure was streaky and unclutch in REAL games, not 3 point contests...some of you may say that Kenny was clutch because of his 7 3 point game against orlando, but i remember many playoff and regular games that he did jack squat. He was hesitant to shoot lots of times...i think it was mental.

No argument, he was a better free throw shooter.

Rafer is definately a better floor general than kenny..he pushes the ball up the floor through traffic better and faster than kenny and better than many point guards.

Rafer is hands down a better defender...kenny sucked.

Sure Kenny is a better shooter, but i think as of late, alston's shooting is good enough.

So all in all, I would rather have him on this team that Kenny. Better ball handler, better D, good enough shooting, better driver into the lane(yes i know his tear drops suck, but at least he can create something sometimes)
