I heard this on the Bob Kemp show. It's funny how this arrogant ******* breaks news before many others do. His info is awesome.

This is according to the NY Times. Starting in 2002-2003, first round matchups will be best of seven.

Any thoughts? I love it because it makes the underdog have to work harder to win, which means it is more likely the best teams will make up the final eight.

the playoffs take too long as it is. maybe they should cut the regular season by 3 or 4 games to compensate.

Actually, this was already broken in Mike Khan's notebook on CBS Sportsline. Oh, and I think this is great news. The more basketball, the better.

Mike Khan's notebook on CBS Sportsline (which ZRB mentioned)

Sources out of the league office are saying this will be the last season the first round of the playoffs will be a best-of-5 series. Along with the new six-year television contract next season will be the expansion in the first round to best-of-7.

Bob Kemp probably gets good info by reading the info the papers put out on their websites late at night, since he's the only one up, he "breaks" the story.

As for why the NBA is doing this, I think the reasoning behind this is simple to understand.

Is Mike Khan related to Genghis? Or the guy Ricardo Montalban played in the second "Star Trek" movie?

I have one prominent hoop writer who is on record (and doesn't care) that told me that "Mike Khan is the biggest d!ck in the biz, and if you ever work for him, you can forget about ever talking to me again."

Mike Wise broke the story Saturday night, I thought. Saturday was penny pitcher night at a bar here, so I missed out on the first edition...

I liked the five game series. I liked the upsets. I liked Dikembe Mutombo having a spazz on the floor of the Sonics' arena.

Yeah, I liked the 5 game series too.

Actually, to make it interesting and to get the best basketball out of both teams, it should be:

    best of 3
    best of 5
    best of 7

Now you're telling me that some teams will play 21 games in the post-season?

    Sloppy, sloppy ball coming.

7 games seems like a bit much... but like an earlier poster said, it's all about the $$$, €€€, ¥¥¥, £££!!!

I prefer the 5-game first round series also.

I agree the playoffs are already long but it's like Puedlfor posted, it's all about the mighty dollar. Who knows though maybe it will backfire and the NBA's ratings will drop and make them change back to the five game first round format.

I like the best of seven games in all the rounds. The NHL has seven game series, and I think it's exciting. MLB has some goofy five game series in the first round. MLS has some crazy five point system where you have to get five points via 3 points for a win and 1 for a tie.

    82 games + 28 possible games in the playoffs = 110 games

And that is not counting the preseason.

Looking more like a marathon to me.

Do you think it is a coincidence that it starts the same year the new TV contract starts?
