What bad has ever happened to a political personality in Dallas? What could possibly go wrong?

Police concerned about order to stop weapons screening at Obama rally

DALLAS -- Security details at Barack Obama's rally Wednesday stopped screening people for weapons at the front gates more than an hour before the Democratic presidential candidate took the stage at Reunion Arena.

The order to put down the metal detectors and stop checking purses and laptop bags came as a surprise to several Dallas police officers who said they believed it was a lapse in security.

Dallas Deputy Police Chief T.W. Lawrence, head of the Police Department's homeland security and special operations divisions, said the order -- apparently made by the U.S. Secret Service -- was meant to speed up the long lines outside and fill the arena's vacant seats before Obama came on.

"Sure," said Lawrence, when asked if he was concerned by the great number of people who had gotten into the building without being checked. But, he added, the turnout of more than 17,000 people seemed to be a "friendly crowd."

The Secret Service did not return a call from the Star-Telegram seeking comment.

Doors opened to the public at 10 a.m., and for the first hour security officers scanned each person who came in and checked their belongings in a process that kept movement of the long lines at a crawl. Then, about 11 a.m., an order came down to allow the people in without being checked.

Several Dallas police officers said it worried them that the arena was packed with people who got in without even a cursory inspection.

They spoke on condition of anonymity because, they said, the order was made by federal officials who were in charge of security at the event.

"How can you not be concerned in this day and age," said one policeman.

If Obama was shot etc. he would just rise from the dead three days later. No biggie.

The new non-screening of weapons is just part of his "change". We will no longer live in fear.

Reagan was absolutely charismatic. I'm not denying he belongs on that list. I didn't think of him because I was thinking of people who actually died from the attempt on their life.

this is very troubling. i can't imagine why the secret service would allow this.

isn't really about charisma, purely a security issue.

I never said it was about charisma. Read the thread, again. Someone else said Obama was too charismatic for someone to want to shoot. I responded to that.

This does seem very weird. I attended a Hillary Clinton event a few weeks ago and they were screening everyone. It didn't matter if people had to wait to get screened and missed part of Clinton's speech.

understood, i'm trying to remain on point.

all candidates should be secure to deliver their message. i'd rather Americans decide than some 'lone gunman' with a bullet.

    that is all.

    john lennon.

odd how all these people who advocate non-violence, peace and standing up against government tyranny end up getting murdered.

of course this security break-down happened in dallas, of all places. keep obama away from the grassy knoll!

At the Toyota Center, the email said to not bring bags or anything, some people still did. They would get their bags checked like when you go to an Astros game, there were no metal detectors, unless they went down after the first hour like in dallas.
