Does Francis have greater value to the team, or trade value?

I am NOT starting a thread advocating trading Francis, but am just kicking stuff around...

Considering his headaches, pending free agency, and occassional mental lapses, would you say Francis has greater value as a tradeable commodity than he actually contributes to this team? I actually am unsure, myself, but considering the above factors, and the fact that the impending draft is supposed to be rich in point guards, I think it's a worthy consideration...

I love Stevie, and he is clearly the cornerstone of this franchise, and if both the headache thing and his possible departure were resolved, I would never even consider trading him...but, with these things in play, I wonder...

How high is his trade value? Is it greater than his actual value, to this team? I'm not saying it is,just wondering what others think...The emergence of Griffin as a POTENTIAL marquee player also makes this more worth considering...

I'd rather not give up on a guy b/c he gets headaches.

His pending free agency is also a weak point - he could very plausibly sign an extension this summer.

Im glad this thread came up. That Steve Francis guy is terrible. He has to be the worst guard in the NBA so lets just trade him for the first thing we can get. Matter of fact we should just cut the bum:rolleyes:

Man, what's with the acute posts... did any of you guys actually ready the original thread post.

JAG is just asking for a discussion on Francis' trade value vs. value to the Rocket's team in game (and i suppose other outside intangibles like attracting other talent). All the snide comments are really unwarranted.

Anyhow, I do feel during the next few drafts, there will be a surplus of athletic swingmen and point guards who can hold their own. Odom doesn't seem as valuable lately to Brand... a guy who can get solid moves inside. During that draft year, i thought Odom was wayyy more valuable than Brand ... but lately... Brand players are a rarity whereas Odom types aren't.

Emerging Tinsleys, Parkers... yeah, i think i would have to say Francis' reputation is huge and his contributions on court just slightly smaller than what we could get for him. However, i love the guy and his balanced abilites and no way would want to lose him. He somehow shows a little more class in some way than most PGs as well.

Yeah we "ready" did.

Clearly sounds to me like a fan ready to throw it all away. I get so sick of hearing about trading someone. What does trading really do? breakup a team? Make a team? all of the above?
Next I am gonna hear Francis is making up this migrane problem.

From speculation to conclusion to extrapolation in one spectacular leap...

While I will never try to compete with someone with the capacity for such interpretive gymnastics, might I remind you of one small point...I said I was NOT advocating trading him, just kicking stuff around...you know, like discussing...like fans do...like, the purpose that places like this exist...I am glad that at least ONE person took the time to actually read my post before leaping to knee-jerk reactionism, with sarcasm and/or labelling to boot...

Word up JAG. We have some verrrrrry narrow minded posters on this board. Once they hear the words "trade" and "francis" in the same sentence, they automatically go on a b**** spree. You people need to open up your minds and consider other options. He made some verrrrrrrry interesting points about his current situation. Although trading Francis is very unlikely, is there anything wrong about starting a discussion about it? Isn't that what a BBS is for? I'm beginning to wonder..........

Hey Rocketkid you got some brown left on your nose still.

Lets see jag I have read your post and to me from point blank
your considering what as happend as of lately again your jumping ship to even think about such a scenario

"Considering his headaches, pending free agency, and occassional mental lapses, would you say Francis has greater value as a tradeable commodity than he actually contributes to this team? "

Your quote Jag: "Mental lapses" "Headaches" sounds to me like your giving up on the guy no matter how much your throwing stuff around.

You stated if these headaches and the worry of him leaving scared you even though you have no clue at all if he would leave or not you would still consider trading him or "entertain" the possibilities as you stated.
If you did not start a thread advocating to trade francis you sure the hell could have fooled me! everything you stated sounds to me like your win or else Fan!

Jag- its amazing how so many people can be so shallow. I think its a good point to bring up , but people on this board will take it out of context. Its kind of like is the team better with Hershel Walker or draft picks. If he doesn't sign an extension this summer, it has to be given some real thought. I don't like it, but after next yr, Washington will be a steve francis away from being a good team every yr. They have Rip, Haywood is coming around and Kwame might fill out, you throw in a Francis in the East, and they're ready to run.

Its not that far fetched to think the Wizards aren't in the running if Francis doesn't resign. If he does resign, then the question is a moot point, but if he doesn't, I think they have to explore the reality of trading him to get something Real for him, not trash.

Ok...point by point...

1) Of course I considered Francis' free agency, headaches, etc...they are RELEVANT. How, exactly, is bringing relevant developments into the discussion the equivalent of 'giving up" on Francis? They effect both sides of the question, his value as an asset and his value to the team, and I am interested in whether people think they tip the scales one way or another...You have concluded that my raising the question equates to my advocating trading Francis, but have you given this supposition any thought at all? Beyond the fact that I not only never said such a thing, but in fact stated the opposite, why would raising these concerns necessarily mean he means more in a trade? Wouldn't these factors also affect his trade value? And, furthermore, which of these points isn't accurate; that Francis gets headaches, is prone to occasional mental lapses, or will be a free agent in a year and a half? If stating these facts equates to giving up on him, can I add that he's 6-3? What does that mean, that I want to marry him? I am completely baffled at how stating facts which affect his value, either way, is the same as arriving at any conclusion, let alone giving up on him...

2) Your (somewhat oblique) statement that I wouldn't have brought up his free agency even though I " have no clue" demerits my position is, in my opinion, idiotic. First of all, several things about which we have no direct knowledge are discussed in here every day...We are fans, our direct knowledge is limited, and yet this never stops us from asking whether or not we should sign Free Agent X, or what the negotiations were between Hakeem and the Rox, etc. etc...Secondly, let's say I have no clue...have you? If ( and I completely disagree, but for argument's sake) I have declared that we should trade Francis because of his status, without knowledge, what are you basing opposing me upon? Have you any knowledge that the rest of us don't? If lack of a "clue" as to what he'll do invalidates my (supposed) position, why doesn't it do the same to yours? It either works both ways or it doesn't work at all..

3) You have concluded that I meant trade Francis, and am a win-or-else fan, despite my statements to the contrary, simply because I have asked the question...This is pure drivel. First of all, GM's do this all the time...They put out "floaters" to guage a player's current trade value, and compare it with their own assesment. How else do you ever know anything if you don't ask the questions? Your specious reasoning, that I have given up on Francis and want to trade him, for the single reason that I asked whether he was worth more as a member of our team or a trade asset, and that this is proven by the fact that I asked it, is wholly without any foundation in fact, but is based entirely upon your interpretation. Only ignorant people are afraid of questions, or see any danger in them. I defy you to point out ONE thing I said which advocates trading Francis, but this time, please make it something based in fact, not in how something sounds to you. Good God, you'd think this was the late middle ages, and I'd commited sacrilege by asking aloud whether or not the sun really revolved around the earth...

Hey, JAG is not the narrow-minded one here. He asks a provocative and legitimate questions and all he gets is cat-calls and sarcasm.

I guess it strokes your ego to be abusive but why not just consider his question....

Relevant question but touchy!
Ok, Let's rephrase:

What are the good reasons to trade Francis?

1st: We know he has permanent health issues and we wan't a return for his value before it's too late, because this would be a catastrophe.

In this case, I suspect other trading partners would be suspectful and give far less than his value.

2nd: He just doesn't jell with other key Rockets players.

The only one I see here is E. Griffin. Is it true that Francis doesn't seem so fond of having Griffin shine and eventually shine brighter than him? (open question).

In this case, he better understand that having a Griffin, Francis Combo and having him be the other, if not sole, main offensive force is the most surest way to attain playoffs (in 2 or 3 years), much more than a Francis/Mobley combo.

3nd: he is having to many unreasonnable requests on player management ( Moochie, Mobley, Shandon, T Morris...) and these do not lead to a championship team but to a Francis Mob.

Still: open quetion. However, some questions can be raised on the opportunity to reward Moochie with such a big contract. MObley is well priced, but is just a decent guard, just like former Houston player Dickerson, and (for me), and cannot reach an all-star status. Making a Mobley/Francis Duo good, but not great.

4th: he is not pleased being a ROcket, and constantly pouts, having a negative impact on the team.

This, at least is definitevly false!

I agree that Jag is posting a relevant question. If you think it isn't, WHY DON'T YOU JUST IGNORE IT?!? Taking "precious time" out of your day to piss in someone's cheerios is pretty lame. Anyway....

Jag, I think that the very notion that Franchise is the cornerstone for the Rockets makes him a player you would never deal. If we all believe he is the piece, or one of two pieces, that the future hinges on, then his known value is immeasurably better than an unknown quantity. We already know his strengths and weaknesses within the system, and i'm of the opinion that a player of his status is simply too valuable to deal.

Personally, I take the risk that he doesn't sign an extension, because what we would get in return of a sign and trade deal, or whatever we would likely get to trade him before his contract is up, likely won't be enough, or would be too great of a risk.

The answer probably lies within his trade value.

Would we want a PG or something else in the trade
Would Charlotte/New Orleans trade Baron Davis? Would Cleveland trade Andre Miller? More? Less? If we get high in the draft, and can land Jason Williams, would you trade Francis for another position, like SF or C?

Then there's chemistry issues-redoing the system, etc. How would the fans react, and the players on the team? Toronto offered #5, #12, Christie, and Willis for Hakeem, but we didn't do it mainly because of the kickback the organization would suffer.

Francis is our Franchise right now, and it'd take a lot to trade him. If Hakeem were still here, it might even be possible, but in these conditions, I doubt it.

jungle...

In terms of his free agency, I agree with you, to a point...Living in Toronto, I've seen the negative side of playing the waiting game, and end up watching someone pack up and go home. THat said, I would set a deadline..ie, this up-coming off-season. This is only one issue, however, and while I'm not sure I agree with your overall assessment of Francis' relative value, I apprecitate your addressing the question as it was intended. I don't actually disagree with you either, just haven't made up my mind yet...

One way of answering would be to try and figure out what Francis' value would be, return-wise, on the market. In my mind, without the health concerns, or free- agency, he's one of the very best young players out there, and his commeserate value would have to be very high. Conversly, those two factors would depreciate his trade value...Can you think of an even trade, player wise? I don't mean a realistic one, as in making sense for both teams, I just mean player for player...Odom has questions, same tenure, and drugs vs. health, but I'd put Francis higher, although his health might be a larger concern than Odo,'s drug thing, as one is within the player's control and one isn't..However, i feel that Francis has shown marked improvement each year, whereas Odom hasn't really..Baron Davis? Andre Miller? Elton Brand? There are problems with all of them, and, were it not for the aforementioned concerns, I would put Francis significantly above all of them...but how much effect do those concerns have? Do they lower him below these guys? Marion? Gasol? Any thoughts?

The only feasible time to include the name Steve Francis and trade in the same sentence is if and when Jason Williams is a solid draft choice for the Rockets.
