I opened a Word document from the UK and now I cannot revert back to the U.S. normal.dot. Any suggestions? Thank you.
Yep, when I open a new or current Word document, the settings have changed to the UK ruler, page sizes, etc...
When you are searching for the normal.dot files, ensure that you are including hidden files and folders - and be aware of the ghost versions of normal.dot ( ~ormal.dot ~normal.dot ~$ ormal.dot). If that doesn't work, then go here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/820919/en-us If you still can't get it going, try a full virus scan just in case.
You're upgrading for the wrong reason, then. Try to fix this. I will update from home. I know I've done this before... is it XP or 2003? You might have clicked "yes" when it asked you if you wanted to change a setting. As soon as I find it, I will update again.
I hope you haven't left us, University Blue... Here's something interesting, down-to-earth, plain-folk explained on how Normal.DOT operates. Read this http://pubs.logicalexpressions.com/pub0009/LPMArticle.asp?ID=151 and another possible solution: http://www.elamb.org/howto/normal-dot.htm . And please answer me what version of Word you have, and how you can tell that your "UK" template it is not a US template. For instance, what setting changed?
Thank you. I am running 2003. The units of measure changed and won't stay on inches and printing cuts off due to a different paper size in the UK?
I would suppose you could go to your settings and change those in your WORD OPTIONS and apply those to the "Normal" template... but I can't recall what those look like in 2003. I believe it might be "Tools->Options...", General Tab: Measurement units, to change to INCHES. If that doesn't work, I don't know what's causing it to stay still. In 2007, you would go to OFFICE-BUTTON, Word Options (at the bottom of the Office Menu, go to Advanced section on left pane, scroll to "Display" section on right pane, select Inches from "Show Measurements in units of:". Then for the paper size, check the "Scale content for A4 or 8.5 x 11" option. Did you COMPLETELY remove all instances of Normal.dot when you searched for it? Don't give up on this thing, man. You can beat it. No program is worth getting YOU a headache.
Can you go to Add Remove Programs and repair the installation of Office? I'm not sure if doing a repair would replace the Normal.dot file or not because I'm not sure if it is a key file within the msi. If it is, then it should fix the problem.
