Tragic news. Not to excuse what the student did, but the pressure and stress can be enormous. He just took it out on innocent people :(

What a tragedy. I admit law school was stressful, but I would never guess that a person intelligent and dedicated enough to make it into Virginia Law School would snap like that. Good thing that there were students brave enough to tackle and disarm him before he killed any more. God bless the victims and their families.

Society hates lawyers until they need them.

The anti-law profession in this country sickens me.

Woah, you guys were scaring me by saying it was "Virginia Law School." The shooting was not at UVA Law, where a good friend of mine is right now. This is really tragic. I graduated from a college known for its suicide rate. In fact, there were about 3 suicides in 4 years during my time there. Some people just can't handle the pressure, and their brain goes *snap*. Law school, according to my fiancee, is pretty tough. Competition is fierce. The workload is overwhelming. She has to write 30 pages of her law school journal note by next week. That would be enough to make me want to go on a killing spree. Thank God I'm not in school anymore...

Um, lawyers can't do a thing unless their clients tell them to. It doesn't excuse scummy lawyers, but where there's a scummy lawyer, there's usually an even scummier client.

And of course, don't forget that most lawsuits that actually make it beyond summary judgment or dismissal (which is what happens most of the time) are started by even scummier types.

How so what? How so the decay of the judicial system in this country? Or how so that it was induced by the lawyers?

As far as the decay of the system...just look around. Justice is adminstered on a per dollar basis. The more dollars you have the more justice you get.

As far as why the blame rests squarely on the shoulders of the lawyers.....easy; they're the ones that run the system....including defense attorneys, prosecutors and judges alike.

Man, what a cynical view! Have you had personal experience telling you this (civil or criminal)? Still upset over the OJ trial? Or are you just regurgitating what you heard someone else say? And how do you propose we fix the problem?

In my experience, most lawyers are extremely hard-working people who try to do the best job they can for their clients. We do live in a capitalist society, so the best and brightest lawyers, working for the best firms, do command top dollar. Those attorneys are often better able to advocate the case for their clients than a less-skilled attorney would be. The case still ultimately is decided by a neutral jury, or a judge, neither paid by nor beholden to either party.

But I see the problem as being no worse than in any other profession. Medicine, for example, certainly favors those with more money. The entire health care system provides better doctors and better care for those able to afford it than for those who have no or poor insurance coverage.

First...we kill all the lawyers:D Couldn't resist that! But seriously, what happened to "and justice for all".... Isn't there something in the consitution about fair legal representation? I suppose the more money you have, the fairer it is, eh? You think I'm cynical, try talking to some of the less fortunate souls cooling their heels in penal institutions across the country because they couldn't afford some ****** lawyer and had to resort to an overworked public defender.

In my experience, most lawyers are pompous arrogant leeches.

True, but then there aren't any statements in the constitution guranteeing fair medical care.

RM95: How about the Tobacco Settlement? A few lawyers got obscenely rich. A few individuals who sucked smoke into their lungs and ignored their body's quivering rejection of it got rich. Now the public will pay more for cigarettes.

Yes tobacco companies are unethical and cigarette smokers are stupid. I say that they deserve each other.

Sorry if I offend any cigarette smokers but that is one nasty habit and I'm sick of smelling your habit!

I could care less if people have to pay money for cigarettes. Also, these lawyers became rich courtesy of jurors, not other lawyers. I don't want to debate the merits of the tobacco lawsuits, but if they won, I have no problem with them receiving the money they earned. The attorneys in Texas took 10%, about 20% less than most lawyers take. What people also don't understand is that these attorneys put up a lot of their own money to fight these cases. If they were such leeches (spoken by someone who's probably never met a lawyer), why would they make that big a risk, and cut what they normally receive by 20%?
