I think we should. The guy averages almost 6 rebounds in only 12 minutes per game this season. I wonder why apparently nobody wants to keep a guy like that, though. And who would we have to give up? How about Massenburg and Pig Miller?
Those of you who counsel patience about trades . . . how long should we stay patient about this one? Isn't this guy exactly what we need? And don't we have the expendable goods to get him?
I wouldn't give up anything major (Mobley/Drew) because he is a bit on the short side (6'7) for a power forward. The most I would offer is Rogers+TMass or something to that effect. He pretty much seems like an accelerated version of Kenny Thomas.
Personally, I am for standing pat with the existing team nucleus: Francis Olajuwon Cato SA Mobley Thomas I would trade Mobley and Thomas for the right deal, but I think they have more value to the rockets than to other teams. The tradeable players are Drew Rogers Mass Walt If Fortson can be had with this, I am for it.
It looks like the Celtics just want to unload him. Seam Marks is a bum and Alvin Williams isn't that good. I think that Forston comes cheap.
----> Beck and Cabbage Patch Kid Right on. Pitino basically killed what little leverage he had by accepting Toronto's offer of next-to-nothing. I think we could even get Fortson straight-up for TMass if Rudy so desired.
I was reading in the chronicle the morning that while Williams failed his physical due to his knee, it was not the reason the trade was rescinded. Alvin Williams has had no problem playin on the knee and can still very easily play on it. Boston had gotten a better offer from Seattle and the physical was just away to get out of the trade so expect Fortson to be a Supersonic, whatever that is, very soon.
Cabbage, Why is everybody talking about Fortson? Have the Rockets contacted his agent or something? From what I've read on the BBS, it seems like people talk in between we should and we have pursued the guy. I'm just curious to know what the scoop is, if there is one. As a more material note, Fortson is Mr. Foul Happy of the NBA. He makes raw meat look well done as far as his skill level goes. If somebody (the Rockets?) could teach the boy to bang and board without hearing a ringing noise in his ears from the refs' whistles, I'd say grab him. Anybody who's worried about his height should read about Larry Smith-they're similar player-types, IMO. Pass 1st, shoot 2nd.
P1S2 yesh. Why do people insist on choosing players based on some preconceived ideal body measurement? Forget about Fortson's height. Besides, he's 260 lbs. He is well suited to play that position. If you are going to wait for a 6'10' PF who can pull down 11.6 rebounds a game like Fortson did last year (#4 in league), then you are going to wait a long time. Antonio Davis isn't available anymore. [This message has been edited by heypartner (edited February 14, 2000).]
