Worst - Hubie Brown The guy goes on and on and on and on with the most in depth analysis of every play on the floor. Best - JVG Good humor and analysis. Doesn't overdo anything.
Mark Jackson is bad, JVG is good, Marv Albert is the best play by play, followed by Kevin Harlan. I actually liked the Sonics broadcast team from the game a few nights ago, Snapper Jones is always good and the play guy had a good voice and wasn't very biased at all! I also like John Barry, Bill Walton. Reggie Miller is terrible, he says "uncharturrrrd waturrs" every other sentence
That makes him the worst? I would have chosen someone who's neither entertaining or informative to listen to.
Kevin Calabro has done the Sonics play-by-play forever. He might be my favorite. Snapper is good too. I agree Hubie Brown over-analyzes and talks too much. He would help himself by dialing back some.
That was my exact choice the first time this thread was made. Hubie Brown simply says; "so and so gives you 10points, 5 to 6 rebs, and shoots an efficient 48%"
I don't want to sound like a homer, but Drexler is the worst. I relish every rockets road trip to listen to the other team's announcer on league pass. Did anyone else notice that when Jim Peterson swapped places with Clyde during the Minnesota game that he was ridiculously more knowledgeable than Clyde about the Rockets players? Like he had actually done some work to prepare for the game that he gets paid to cover. Novel concept. Why can't we hire this guy again? But no, we get to listen to Clyde tell us that Andre Miller is not really that good at those runners and short jumpers near the basket that he is killing us with.
I don't have much to say about commentators, but if anybody remembers back in the day when ESPN had for a short period tim hardaway and kevin frasier doing the pregame/halftime shows, that was possibly the worst sports television I have ever seen in my life. Those two were completely incompetent together. The most memorable moment i remember was when tim cracked a stupid joke during the shootaround show, and those two laughed for like 15 seconds.
Clyde has improved since his early days, but boy does he have ways to go. I actually like Mark Jackson. He is insightful and brutally frank/candid. I listen to him do the Nets broadcasts frequently and think he is very objective.
I like Hubie for the reasons people don't. JVG is probably at the top - great combo analysis and entertainment. I really hate Mike Fratello's commentary. I always feel like I'm going to fall asleep when I hear his voice. Not a fan of Mark Jackson either. He's got a little bit of the hyperbole problem...reminds me of Sean Salisbury (NFL), kind of hard for me to explain. I think Jon Barry and Reggie Miller are in the middle. Their analysis is so-so, but they're entertaining at least.
Agreed. He isn't afraid to say what's on his mind and too many "homer" team announcers won't do that.
Worst - Clyde. They should just have Air Bull do all the games. Best - JVG. I prefer having him as the Rockets coach, but if he can't have that job, I am glad he can call games. He better get the good/Rockets playoff assignments.
I might just be too nice but... I like MOST national TV analysts. Maybe because I don't really listen to them, but I like just enjoy having their voice in the background as I watch the games intently. I like how Hubie Brown analyzes a lot. If I had a friend who needed to learn something about basketball I'd tell him to listen to Hubie Brown's games. I like JVG the most though. Marv Albert, Kevin Harlan, Doug Collins, Jon Barry, all good. JVG is the best by far. He's even funny in the ESPN commercials.
I like Marv Albert/ Kevin Harlan but I can't tell the 2 apart to save my life. Their voices are eerily similar at least to me. " Tracyyyyyyyyy McGrady FTW!!!!!!!!!!!" I like Doug Collins but he's so whiny I think thats what makes him good his whining voice is very convincing. All time greatest is Bill Walton though, of course. "Throw it downnnnnnnn big man throw it down. One time. "
My favorite is Marv Albert followed by Kevin Harlen. Hubie is the best analyst, I like JVG and Doug Collins too. I can't stand the hyperbole of Walton but I think Tom Tolbert has got to be one of the worst guys on TV.
