Maybe you would get more rebounds if you were the tallest player in a playground pickup game. But in the NBA, being tall doesn't necessarily mean that you are a great rebounder. You might be 9 inches taller than a 6'9" player but the latter can easily outjump you by 2 feets (24 inches). How tall is Dennis Rodman anyway?

    Rebounding = desire.

It's no coincidence that as he's getting a nastier mentality, his rebound totals are going up also. Say what you will about his minutes increasing, but he's been aggressively going after rebounds a lot more this season.

No matter how tall you are, if you have a rebounding match against Earl Boykins, that 5'5 guy, I'll bet my money on him.

    2002-03 29.1 9.7 22.6 16.3
    2003-04 32.8 9.1 22.4 16.1
    2004-05 30.6 10.2 21.4 15.9
    2005-06 34.2 9.1 25.6 17.5
    2006-07 33.8 7.2 24.7 16.0
    2007-08 37.4 9.8 22.9 16.4

I like that Yao is getting to more offensive rebounds, and he's able to do so playing significantly more minutes.

yeah, everyone thinks the tallest guy on the court should grab every single rebound and make every single dunk cause nobody should be able to compete with them right? The biggest guy doesn't get foul calls why? Cause he's big and should be able to shrug those things off. Big guys get the shaft in basketball in terms of perception, and officiating.

Yao actually averaged more rebounds in December with less minutes.

He shot a lot better from field in January though, basicly went away from all those hook shots in favor of his turn around jumpers.

    Why stop at there?

We should all NOT be satisfied until Yao gets 16 rebounds (one more than Dwight Howard) to go with 30 points per game average!!!

Why? Because he is 7'6", flies faster than a speeding bullet, leaps over tall buildings with a single bound and shoots laser beams from his eyes.

    :D

Good thing is Yao has more stamina. His rebounding used to go down a lot when he was tired. Keep the same rate in longer minutes means he indeed improved some.

i think people are over analyzing this. more minutes.

but i would also add to that, that he has looked the quickest than he has ever before.

Imagine how many rebounds Yao would get if he actually stayed at the lane during the opposing team's foul shots. That's a HUGE number. Hell, Jimmy Jackson racked up most of his rebounds that way.

In the other hand DH is #1 in rebounds but all are in the defensive end taking away Rebound from other teammates. In the offensive end he has to battle other team bigs and he average the same as Yao. DH is a good rebounder but playing without a legit PF he got extra opportunities to grab more boards. We just saw Kaman without another legit rebounder around he is just a monster.

    Houston is +3.16 | Orlando +0.40

Orlando with only other 2 players ave 5+ RPG
Houston with other 4 players ave 5+ RPG (T-Mac hasn't play much but and he is 4.7RPG)

Yao did that in his rookie year under Rudy. He grabbed several crital offensive rebounds late in games.

But I can understand why JVG and RA doesn't let him do that anymore. He's too slow to get back to prevent fast breaks.

He doesn't do that already? I know he hangs back when the Rockets are shooting free throws, but he shouldn't be doing that when the opponent is shooting them.

IMO, yao just becomes more aggresive on rebounding, he used to "pick" balls, but now he fights for every ball, he knows he has to do this

No offense, but that is dumb. How many guys in the league are the average of height of Boykins?

I think I read the average was like 6'8"?

It's usually Yao shooting the free throws, when the The Rockets are shooting free throws. In the last game, Yao shot 15 free throws and the rest of the team shot a total of 11 free throws. 80-90% of the time there is no rebound, because he makes the shot. The other 10-20% of the time, he is out of position. ;-)

Adelman does not have Yao chasing guards on the perimeter.....
