I'm on record as being anti-AOL so this blows: The entire staff of CNN-Sports Illustrated, nearly 160 workers, will be terminated in June when AOL Sports takes control of the cable channel. CNNSI staffers were told this afternoon that only those who remained through the change-over would be eligible for severance benefits.
I liked CNNSI except for world sport. I would watch it a bunch since I dont get ESPNNEWS but now with the death of CNNSI, thanks to the AOHELL takeover I'm going to be forced to pay extra for ESPNNews. The ONE and ONLY ONE good thing ever to come out of AOHell was AIM.
"Everyone I know is on AOL." Is anyone sick of this stupid ass commercial, because I know I sure as hell am. AOL is the biggest rip-off, and is hands down the worst ISP ever. Why people pay $30 for DIAL-UP I will never know. You can pay $10 more for the fastest surfing on the net for DSL or cable. (Thank God for Roadrunner) Or if you cant afford it you can pay $10 for Everyones Internet and use Netscape or Explorer as your browser........ The SCARY thing is that they are installed in some way shape or form on everyones computer...... Honestly having worked in the computer industry, I think more than half of America thinks that AOL is the ONLY way to get on the internet and email. I have a new slogan: "Everyone I know who doesnt know crap about ISP's and likes to overpay for dial-up are on AOL."
There is another reason why CNNSI is going bye bye... NBA TV is about to become a reality. The NBA deal with Time/Warner/AOL and ABC is supposed to include replacing CNNSI with NBA TV that will feature additional games because ABC will only broadcast about half of the games that NBC currently has.
Those AOL commercials are hilarious. There was a time when AOL provided services that were not yet wide spread throughout the internet, but that time has long since passed. With any 'net connection, you can do anything through a browser that AOL can do, except take up a crap load of disk space and memory when running. But statements like: "It's so EASY." "Everybody I know is on AOL." "Email is great." "I can talk to my grandmother EVERY NIGHT." They just crack me up. It is sad that the company still makes a buttload of money every year.
Actually I pay $44 for AOL and high speed. If you are an AOl customer, you can add highspeed for only $20. Not sure where you got the $30 from. So to me, i would rather pay the $4 extra for AOL vs roadrunner. Of course they don't really care as the $$$ all goes to the same place.
What do you mean by NBA TV? Is that like the current NBA.com channel they have for digital cable and sattelite? This isn't suprising since AOL owns basically everything Ted Turner started up.
I'm confused. Is NBA TV going to be a new network? Does this mean that NBC and Turner aren't going to be broadcasting the games after this season?
"Type in the word LATINO and you get all kinds of stuff!" I'm paraphrasing, mmmkay? but nonetheless, STUUUPID!
That is correct. It all went down a few weeks ago. ABC/Disney has the new NBA contract. Most of the NBA games will now be shown on ESPN and AOL TV. ABC will only show a few games and the championships. Personally, I think it sucks. os
So basically NBC Sports is dead. No Football No Basketball No Hockey Baseball only and I guess the soccer, bowling, figure skating or something lame like that. Not only have their sitcoms started to blow, they have virtually no sports coverage now. Sucks for them. And whats up with this AOL TV bullsh!t?? AOL blows.
Ahhhhhh... I eagerly await the day when I'll wake up for work, eat my Sony flakes cereal, get in my Microsoft electric car (top speed: 45 MPH), drive to my job at the AOL factory, come home to my loving wife (who works for Starbucks), and relax and watch the ABC Comedy channel on the Sony boob tube (or maybe a little ABC Movies, ABC Sports, ABC News, ABC Family, ABC p*rn, ABC Gameshows, ABC Cartoons, ABC-AOL-MSN TV, or ABC Public Access). What a life. I can't wait. Resistance is futile.
AOL is one of the reasons the internet is as popular and successful as it is today. It's designed for the user who doesn't know anything about the internet and maybe very little about computers, and ultimately, that is the core audience that AOL controls. AOL was smart in how they built their company -- targetting the market no one else went after -- and its resulting in phenomenal bottom-line revenues, profits, and growth. Especially for the older, less technology-savvy generation (also known as the still-untapped market), AOL is an extremely useful tool because its far more user-friendly than just putting Yahoo in front of you and saying "figure it out".
NBC does not have baseball. You are forgeting NASCAR! Look for NBC to make a run at the NFL in a couple of years...probably just to make CBS and Fox spend a lot more than they wanted to. Reports had NBC losing 200 million last year on the NBA...I guess I can't blame them. OS
Interesting. AOL tells you you can get "DSL" or "high speed DSL" from them... do they ever bother mentioning what the speed of the DSL is? If it's 256k down, and you're comparing that with a good cable modem service, there's no way you can compare the 2 - the cable modem outperforms it. This is true even if it's 768k down. GTE does the 768k down for about $49 I think. I'm guessing AOL uses GTE or SW Bell's network, but don't quote me on that. AOL is proof "there's a sucker born every minute". Their commercials make it seem as if they are the Internet when they're nothing more than a marketing machine that markets to people that many times don't know any better. They actually provide a good service to those not too Net-savvy, but their commercials make their users sound like complete dolts.
Are you F%&#ing kidding me 256k DSL what a rip. I prefer my 2900K Cable connection with NO log ons, NO ADS, and absolutly no ISP software running to slow down my computer or my connection. TG for RR!
but their commercials make their users sound like complete dolts. But that's the point. They're targetting the people who think the internet's too complicated or have no clue where to start. By going to the absolute basics, they target that exact market. The ads aren't aimed at you or me, so it's going to look like a dumb ad to us. But I'd bet you that the commercial is attractive to the person who is scared of the internet, and that's exactly what AOL wants. I think AOL is much smarter than most people give them credit for.
So is it going to be a pay channel, or will it be a basic channel? Does this affect the League Pass stuff?
