......and I'll be spending the weekend in Amsterdam. anything I should do? I've been threatening my wife that I'm gonna go into a coffee shop and eat a space cake, but this August I'll be 41 and we're expecting our first. Perhaps it's time to be uber-repsonsible.........for, I don't know........maybe the rest of my life. Anyway, what can I NOT miss?
I am not kidding: http://www.flickr.com/photos/7920337@N02/1021872515/ Herring! The very best of Dutch food.
I've been told there are topless ice cream parlors in Amsterdam. I couldn't pass something like that up. Ice cream plus boobies equals nature's thermometers staring me in the face as my server bends over to get my scoop out of the large, chilly freezer. Mmmmmm.
I hear if you do more than 2 cases of shrooms you can see peoples souls. But then you might die, weakling.
Know what they put on french fries instead of ketchup in Amsterdam? Mayonnaise. I seen 'em do it, too. They f***in' drown 'em in that s**t.
I was only in Den Haag for a day and liked it a lot, reminded me of Brussels. Make sure to take the tram down to Delft, it's a very picturesque little town Oh, and buy a cone of fries with mayo
The best place for herring is in the central square in Haarlem. It's a beautiful little town, only a 15 minute train ride from Amsterdam
Amsterdam is a nice place. Just going to the centre and see the canals is already interesting, Ofcourse everybody says you have to visit the Anne Frank house (The most famous Jewish girl during WW2, she was hiding in that house). Ofcourse a lot of people will tell you to go to museums. Den Haag is also nice, you can take Public transportation to Scheveningen, wich is the most famous beach here (However remember that it is to cold to go sun bathing). A good way to see the dutch landscapes is going by train from Amsterdam to Utrecht (also a nice city with canals) You will see lot of meadows. It only takes about half an hour. You will pass the station and town of Breukelen (which i grew up in) which is the town Brooklyn is named after. Or go by train to Hilversum (not a really nice city but you will go trough the Naardermeer one of the most beautiful nature areas in the netherlands). How are you going to Amsterdam from Den Haag? because if you go by train you will probably see enough of the landscape. Herring is something you have to try when you are in the Netherlands. Unfortunatly i'm to busy this weekend otherwise I would have showed you around.
thats where i stayed. hotel van onna, about a half-block from the anne frank house. nice, quiet, clean and friendly - free full-breakfast every morning. the jordaan is where all the brown cafes are, which are basically 400 year old neighborhood bars - they are called brown cafes b/c of the wooden interior and the fact that hundreds of years of smoke have turned the walls brown - they have lots of cool beers you have never heard of. must sees are the rijksmuseum, the van gogh museum, the anne frank house and the vondelpark. if the wife allows you should duck into abraxas (cool atmosphere) or barneys (cannabis-cup winner when i was there). i wouldnt mess w/ any mushrooms or space cakes if you are flying solo, but definitely get some herbals.
