Cuomo Bounces Clinton Ally Larry Flynt from Fund-raiser

Hustler magazine publisher Larry Flynt, a longtime ally of ex-President Bill Clinton, has been removed as "vice chairman" of a Los Angeles fund-raiser for Democratic New York gubernatorial hopeful Andrew Cuomo after criticism erupted over the notorious pornographer's involvement.

Cuomo campaign manager Josh Isay told the New York Daily News that Flynt was out because his participation was "inconsistent with Andrew's positions."

Before the announcement of Flynt's removal, Republicans delighted in the blunder. "I guess it's who you seek out when you're blinded by naked ambition," Republican New York State Senate Majority Leader Joe Bruno quipped at news of the Cuomo-Flynt alliance.

Flynt was named vice chairman after contributing $10,000 to the Cuomo effort, something Isay defended earlier in the day.

"Just as Andrew has the right to fight for a woman's right to choose and build homeless shelters for battered women, people have a right to support Andrew Cuomo."

For his part, Flynt said through a spokeswoman, "If he wants to return the donation, that's fine.cil If he wants my name off as co-chair, that's fine too. I am doing this for him, not me."

The Cuomo fund-raiser is just the latest in a series of Flynt's forays into the political world.

Last April he ran an ad in Hustler offering $10 million to President Bush's teenage daughter Jenna if she would appear naked in his magazine. (See: Larry Flynt Targets First Daughter with $10 Million Offer) The ad featured a doctored photo of Jenna's head superimposed on the body of a nude model.

During the 2000 presidential campaign, Flynt gave a series of talk radio interviews where he claimed he could produce a female witness who would say she had once aborted President Bush's love child. The woman announced through a spokesman that the allegation was untrue.

In 1998 Flynt alligned himself with sex-scandal-scarred President Bill Clinton, offering $1 million to any woman who would come forward with sexual dirt on prominent Republicans in Washington, D.C. The offer resulted in enough embarrassing information to force House Speaker Bob Livingstone to resign his post just hours before Clinton was impeached.

While Cuomo and other prominent Democrats, including radical Los Angeles City Council hopeful Tom Hayden, have been compelled to distance themselves from Flynt, Clinton reportedly welcomed the pornographer's help.

"The president sent word to me, you know - ahh, he was thankful for my effort," Flynt told the New York Observer after the 2000 Democratic Party convention.
