JVG did what he thought was best for Yao, Rick Adelman is doing what he things is best. Both will make Yao a better player...actually that is a fallacy...YAO will make Yao a better player. Even though his scoring is down, I think he is playing so much better on defense this year and his rebounding is much improved. Not to mention that the team's record with Tmac out is MUCH MUCH MUCH better this year, which also shows improvement in teamplay..... So, I think Yao still has room to improve, and will only get better as he gets more comfortable playing either JVG's way or Rick Adelman's way. It is on Yao. DD
How is Yao not developed? He can hit basically any shot inside the three point line with the exception of the very long range jumper. Mid range and inside he is money. He uses his height and weight to his advantage yet still has a soft-enough touch to shoot jumpshots fairly accurately. Tell me, with supporting facts, how Yao has not developed and what, exactly, YOU consider a developed Center in the NBA. Do you want him running up and down the court, cutting to the basket and dunking all day like Amare? Not happening with his speed and quickness Do you want him camped out at the 3 point line all game shooting open 3's when his defender cheats off of him to guard the low block? Tell me Tell me exactly what part of Yao's game needs developing and has not been developed over the last 5 seasons. You don't have to master a system to be a good player and to be a developed player. JVG's terrible offense that you complain about focused on Yao roughly 50% of the time. 50% for one player. How is that bad for Yao? He still passes well and makes shots, both inside and outside. Put the pipe down, bro EDIT: and I understand what you are saying. You are saying that b/c Yao was involved in JVG's slow down offense for 4 years, he is ruined b/c he has not learned to play in a more up-tempo offense. I get it...and you are wrong. If you are a fundamentally sound player with a good head on your shoulders (e.g. Yao Ming), you can adapt to any offense that doesn't require you to do things that are not physically possible.
DD, Thank you, you are right. You are my hero, and as I said, I am a DOF. Actually, in my post (#264), I admitted that I had made a mistake. At that time, I have already bewared that I need give more credits to JVG. I didn't want to deny that JVG did his best. I did say "I know that Yao has played better and better each year under JVG" in my post (#258) . Right, it is on Yao. But I think the coach is very important. I still think that JVG destroyed Yao, but it wasn't all JVG's fault. JVG did his best. As a NBA coach, he needs to know his strength and weakness. I still don't want to change my points in posts #241 and #264. Thanks! .
I've already answered this question in my posts. An above averaged offensive minded NBA coach will be good enough to develop Yao. I am not a NBA coach, therefore, I don't know how to develop Yao. Please don't tell me that you know more than a NBA coach. But, I do know how to choose a coach, and I do know who is better. Please don't make things up, I never said "Yao has to learn to play in a more up-tempo offense", I did said "Yao has to learn to play in a better offense". Let me give you another baby development example. Now, the baby should be sent to an university. Do you really perfer a below average university to an above average university? Same thing to Yao, do you really perfer a below averaged offensive coach to an above averaged offensive coach? .
Kinda wish we could get some Iso plays from the Rudy T era installed. At least free up some of the guys to go to work for a few plays here and there.
No. I never said "Yao didn't improve under JVG". I said "I know that Yao has played better and better each year under JVG (post #258)". I said "JVG destroyed Yao .... What I'm trying to say is that Yao could be a much better player without the guidance of JVG" (post #241). .
His rebounding is not improved. Per minute, his rebounding is down. He is playing 3 and a half more minutes per game than last year and only getting one more rebound. It's on Yao to voice his displeasure to management if he doesn't think this coaching style and system fits him.
"Thanks Jeff." Jonathan Feigen almost said that at the end of Adelman's last post-game press conference. Why? Becaues Adelman sounded almost exactly like JvG. Adelman has no idea why the team doesn't play hard. He has no idea how to fix the problem. They'll seemingly make progress for a little bit and then turn right around and puke up a loss like the one against Philadelphia. Sound familiar??? It's not the coaches. It's the roster. If the Rockets want to make some noise in the playoffs they'd better examine that closely.
its a shame most dont understand/accept this. THis year, i think they do have the roster however. I just think it was stupid timing to change coaches
I think there's just way too many laid back types on the team right now. They choke, and when they get knocked down they don't really get back up. I don't think the Rockets should trade for Artest because he demands the ball way too much. But his fire would be a good addition. He hates to lose, and there's not enough of that on the Rockets right now. Let's face it. If you were going to sum up the season and the team in one word, what would you use? My guess is that for most people it would be "disappointing".
Oh wtf ever....JVG would have stumbled without Tmac for 14 games too....I doubt the record would be any better with JVG as coach. He is gone, why can't people get over it? You don't see me pining for V-Span around here....move on...support the team....that is what fans do. DD
O RLY? http://bbs.clutchfans.net/showthread.php?p=3394833&highlight=V-Span#post3394833 Wide open for that one.
I love what Adelman has done so far. Adelman has brought out the biggest problem of the Rockets - the Rockets cant close games. This was an issue in last season too but we seldom heard or saw any attempt to correct it. Now, Adelman has clearly told the Rockets what their real problem is and he will monitor it.
I disagree. Regardless of the injuries I still think we would be 5-6 wins better under JVG with this same exact group. I'm still behind Adelman though. He's been pretty inconsistent and mediocre so far but it finally seems like this team is starting to get it. I'll stand by Adelman but at the same time I think it's hard to not at least acknowledge that we've looked pretty foolish so far with the JVG firing. 22-19 at the halfway point and in position to not make the playoffs after winning 52 games the previous season? A season that was hampered with the same kind of injury problems? JVG has the last laugh for now.....let's hope it doesn't stay that way.
im very relaxed. take your own advice. JVG did stumble without tmac, you are right. But the rockets struggled while they actually HAD tmac!, and the rest of the team was healthy (plus additional talent, i.e. james, scola, etc). The rockets played crappy well before tmac was out...fact! you dont see me pinning you ability to question an owner without rejecting my critique since i dont own a team....or me pinning me questioning your opinions because you havent coached an NBA team . they should at this point. And you are right, its laid back team and the franchise lost its toughest, most competitive and best leader when they fired jvg. Obviously, that points to a bigger problem...the coach cant be all of those things on a championship team.
Management realized that you can not lead a team to victory from the bench, even JVG talked about how passive the team was last year. It looks like the team's leader is becomming Yao, and Scola is the fire guy. Let's see if that works better in the 2nd half. DD
But the Rockets under JVG also struggled with T-Mac playing in the beginning of 04-05 season, it's break in adjustment.
