Did anyone see this "sack"? My god, that was the biggest gimme I've ever seen. Favre fakes the hand off, as in fakes the hand off to the back who's 2 yards away to his left, and then gives a little half QB roll right into Strahan's direction then falls down. What is THAT!? Everyone says Strahan's a great guy and everything but damn let's not cheapen 20 year old records with obvious flops. Geez...
I personally don't think the record means much to begin with since they didn't start keeping sack totals until ~20 years ago. Do you guys know if every sack by Gastinou was legit?
Why does everyone obssess about records? Especially single season records... I guess with as boring as the NFL is today, you have to get excited about something. What was more pathetic was last night's TB-Philly game. It seemed like the point of that game was to lose it. I hate the NFL. I will be a Texans fan, but I will refuse to waste time watching the 30 other lame teams (I'm excluding the Rams).
kidrock8 you are the Comic Book Guy of the BBS ; Gastineau got his 22 sacks because no one ran the ball in the AFC East in the 1980's , I would not be suprised if Deacon Jones had 30 sacks in a season , he was great one . And The TB - Philly game last night ment nada because both teams playoff seeds were already set and there was nothing a win or loss would have done to change it .
I agree with you, I don't see what's so exciting about this particular record. I mean there are single season records that are exciting to watch fall (ex. home runs) but sacks isn't anything to get excited about especially that he did it on a losing team that didn't even make the playoffs after making the Super Bowl. I also agree about the league being boring. There are too many penalties for too many things (ex. celebrations) and there shouldn't be. I personally like the Owens thing in Dallas he did last year. It's like Warren Sapp said: "If you don't want players to celebrate on your turf, keep 'em from scoring." The Tampa Bay-Philadelphia game ticked me off as well and probably more than you since Philly is my favorite team. Both teams played 2nd and even 3rd stringers most of the game and it wasn't even worth watching but it was nice for me to see the Eagles come back and win. The NFL: The No Fun League
i think that was weak as well. lost some respect for farve.. this was quite a topic on sports radio today.. from the way i understood it.. it was supposed to be a run play. and farve had an audible and then did that.. ? that was pitiful. and last week farve was saying he was sure that he would get the record. while the offensive line was all like. no not against us.
oh and deacon jones. he loves to talk about his records. i met him a couple years ago. and the guy was hillarious. talking about smacking everyoen around lol
I can really see how watching Barry Bonds break the three year old home run record (for a losing team that didn't even make the playoffs) was so much more exciting than Strahan breaking a 20 year old record.
The San Francisco Giants were over .500. The NY Giants sucked. Bonds record breaking swing was excitin becuz the pitchers didn't underhand lob the ball to him. Favre basically threw Gappy a 70 mph fastball. It was a gimme.
I think Favre's a lot smarter than people are giving him credit for. He's buddy-buddy with all the good defensive lineman, he's got great rapport with them. I think that may lead to them "taking it easy" on him. Not that they don't try to sack him or stop him, they probably just don't have the desire to stick him like they probably do for your normal pretty boy QB. I didn't like it. I was watching the game with about 7 fellow Packer fans in Waco (funny old dudes from Wisconsin!) and none of them liked it either. However, we all agreed it wasn't that big a deal. It won't cause any splinters in the locker room, and it wasn't nearly as bad as the UConn debacle a few years ago. My biggest beef with the whole thing is that the only sports radio station in Austin decided to discuss the situation nearly exclusively yesterday morning instead of, hmmm, maybe the basketball team beating the #5 team in the nation or even the fight. I hate 1300!!!
I was refering to the McGwire-Sosa battle not the Bonds chase. When two people are competing for a long standing record like that and at the pace they were going was very exciting.
So, RM95, a guy smiling after his last game ever in the NBA (Clyde Drexler) bothers you, but a guy deliberately giving another team a sack, thus harming the integrity of a 20 year-old record, making his own offensive line look bad, and remotely costing his team a chance to win the game (he rolls out, fumbles the ball, NY recovers, scores a touchdown, etc.) is "not that big of a deal"? That's a little out of whack, isn't it?
No, actually, it's not. You should never ever smile after losing a game, I don't care who in the hell you are, Favre or Drexler. You really shouldn't do it after you couldn't ball up and play good after the guy you couldn't stand was leading you to the first round upset before being injured. You would think at all times that you wouldn't smile, it would be after your last game, a game where you were eliminated from the playoffs. You might also want to go back and read the part where I said I didn't like it, but I also don't think it's as big a deal as everyone (maybe not everyone, but surely the guys in Austin) is making it out to be. Now, if he had done it, smiled, and it cost them the game, then I'd be pissed as hell. The two situations aren't even the same.
Of course they're not the same. What Favre did was a lot worse. It affected history, Mark Gastineau, his offensive linemen's record and reputation, and could have affected the game. But I guess I could see how someone would think smiling after you've finished the last game of your life would be worse than that. Drexler should be taken off the 50 Greatest list for pulling that crap.
