Probably higher than I can count! Report: Jordan's wife of 12 years files for divorce CHICAGO (AP) -- Michael Jordan's wife has filed for divorce, seeking to dissolve her 12-year marriage to the world's most famous basketball player, the Chicago Tribune reported on its Web site Monday night. In a petition filed Friday in circuit court in Waukegan, Ill., Juanita Jordan cited "irreconcilable differences" in seeking a dissolution of her marriage to Jordan. She seeks permanent custody of the couple's three children, the 25,000-square-foot "marital residence" in Highland Park and half the couple's property. The petition listed the couple as J. Vanoy Jordan and M. Jeff Jordan. "It is the parties' hope that the media respect the family's need and desire for privacy in this painful matter," Juanita Jordan's lawyer, Don Schiller, told the Tribune. The six-page petition says irreconcilable differences have caused "the irretrievable breakdown" of Mrs. Jordan's marriage to the basketball superstar and that future attempts at reconciliation "would be impractical and not in the best interests of the family." The couple was married Sept. 2, 1989, in Las Vegas. Their children are Jeffrey, 13, Marques, 11, and Jasmine, 9. Jordan cited a desire to spend more time with his family when he retired from the Bulls the first time in October 1994 and again in January 1999. He maintained his Chicago-area residence when he returned to basketball as a front-office executive with the Washington Wizards last season, but his decision to resume his playing career has kept him in Washington full-time. The petition describes Jordan as "a well and able-bodied man who is capable of making suitable provisions for the support and maintenance of the Petitioner and for the support and education of the parties' children in a style commensurate with that enjoyed by the parties during marriage." Jordan, who was paid more than $30 million in his final season with the Bulls, is one of the world's richest athletes. He plays at home Tuesday night against the Los Angeles Clippers
I love how the article says "Juanita Jordan's lawyer". Yeah, I wonder who's money Juanita is using to pay for "her" lawyer... I have a feeling that Jordan might go OJ on Juanita pretty soon...
She was with him from the beginning. There is nothing Jordan can do unless they work out a deal. She is entitled to approximately half of everything. Financially, this will be disturbing.
I'm not an attorney by any means but I feel that since Jordan married her in 1989, he had probably accumulated a significant amount of wealth before the marriage. I'm sure there was a prenuptual agreement, with David Falk as Jordan's agent I'm sure every bit of legal language was covered. We all know some lawyer is going to say, "Well she was under duress and didn't know what she was signing etc......" But how fair is it that 50% of the money he has made goes to her. I certainly feel that she is deserving of alimony and a settlement, but to ask for 50% is very questionable. I can hear the Chicago lawyers drooling over this one......the longer and dirtier the case is the more they profit.
I think the divorce laws are a joke. I agree with Khan, she should get a small settlement, which im sure Jordon would give her willingly. But to take half is sad.
Who's to say what role she played in motivating and supporting him over the years? It's entirely possible that without her, jordon might not have achieved the position he has.
Illinois is not a community property state...i'm not sure she's entitled to anything close to 1/2 of what he accumulated during the time of their marriage.
So when Jordan only has half of what he used to, he'll have only -- what? -- a gazillion dollars? Who cares if he does get taken to the cleaners; it's not exactly like that money was hard-earned.
yup. once your worth is over a few million, what difference would half make? less taxes? i mean i could live on a quarter (or less) of MJ's worth... someone posted it earlier.... "CHA-CHING!" rH
Geez, I see how Mrs. Jordan would have grounds for the divorce, but you have gotta feel for MJ, not only is he losing his wife, he will lose his home, kids, and 2/5 to 1/2 of his fortune. And what has she done to earn it?(The home and money anyway) Nothing. I definitely believe that it is only fair to supply her with enough money to live on, and maybe the house. But 200 million dollars?
Jordan was already the pre-eminent basketball player in the world when they were married. All that was left was for the pieces to be assembled on the Bulls. I'd be shocked if there wasn't a pre-nup.
You guys are kidding me right? Jorday has retired 2 times to spend more time with his family, the first time, what does he do? He goes off and plays baseball...AWAY from his family. The 2nd time, he comes back to play basketball again. The issue is that Jordan is NOT a family man, he is selfish and does only what he wants. I think she deserves whatever she gets, and the kids...well they deserve a better father. DD
How do you know he's a bad father, because he spends so much time away from his kids? I don't think that's a fair assumption.
