I am in the market for a 19" LCD flat panel monitor, and I heard good things about the Dell brand. It doesn't hurt that they seem to be the only ones offering a 3 year warranty to back up their product, which is highly attractive.

I am looking to pay sub-$200 including shipping. Any other name brands that can compete with the Dell bang-for-the-buck/warranty advantage?

You can't go wrong with Dell, but why not spend about $200 more and get the Samsung 24" bad boy....it ROCKS.

I've been really happy with my 24 inch LCD from Dell. I really like the Samsungs as well -- I just got one for my father. I don't know too much regarding warranty, but my folks are trying to get another Dell monitor fixed within the warranty period, and they haven't been too helpful.

Samsung is very nice, and they have 3-year warranties. I prefer Dell, but I wouldn't kick Sammy out of bed.

At least go for the 20" and above. 19" LCD's that I've seen only go up to 1280x1024. With the 20" you'll at least get 1680x1050. Wait are we talking widescreen here?

I have seem some 22" monitors on slickdeals or techbargains sometimes go for around the 200 price range.

Simple: 19"/20" is the biggest thing that can fit on top of my computer desk :)

I initially wanted a 22" and looked at ViewSonic/Samsung as my two options, but as it turns out 19" is perfectly suited for the job, and more than enough considering I sit within close proximity to it. Heck, a 17" would probably do...

I'm not sure about now, but Dell use to use samsung(or was it LG?) panels in their LCD monitors.(I think they still do) They're not exactly the same, but you won't go wrong if you go with either Dell or Samsung.

Dell uses both LG and Samsung for monitors. I think their 30" monster is an LG (possibly the same panel used in Apples Cinema series).

I've had my 19 in from dell for 3 years, and it hasn't done me wrong.

Their computers on the other hand...

Samsungs are nice if $$$ is not an option.

because spending another 200 bucks would be an 100% increase from his initial budget.

It's not really a 'budget' thing as much as it's an "I know I can get a pretty damn good monitor for under $200" thing. Regardless of how much I make, I am a rational man: I never spend more than I have to. :)
