I was once an Apple afficianado. I still often root for them. All of their artistic designs are far superior to anything pc. But they are just too counter-culture now to really believe in them. I no longer think they will go out of business. I just think that Apple will be what Birkenstocks were: Things that tree huggers and other anti-establishment types use. And remember, once common folk started wearing Birk's the tofu eaters stopped. Does that mean Linux OS is REALLY gonna blow up once mainstream starts diggin' Mac's again? LT
Jesus, LT, I guess I'll go put on my Birks and munch on some tofu while hugging some trees. Actually, I never owned a pair of Birks but I did have tofu for lunch and I hug trees sometimes. You should try it.
I'm all into tree hugging and sandals, but when its time to hack at the kit there is only one way to go and that's Linux. Flat panels, CD burners, and MP3 players are a dime a dozen. Linux's "Gimp" is a world-class image manipulation program. Apple does have a great design department, but if it weren't for video games and MS Office, both Apple's and Microsoft's OS groups would be hemorrhaging badly.
Not everyone is raving about the new design: http://news.cnet.com/news/0-1006-200-8399483.html?tag=lthd
That thing does look like it's easy to knock over... I also think the new Beetle and PT Cruiser look like ****, so maybe I'm just not hip enough for the 21st century...
The new look certainly makes the old transparent colors seem, so "90's". I'm just surprised they haven't been able to break the 1 Ghz barrier yet. OS
Wow...pretty cool. Nobody knocking mine over cause I will be using velcro strips to fasten that puppy down to the table. Where's my PC version?
Ask and ye shall receive... http://www.connectix.com/products/vpc5m.html (Just a note - I have this on my Mac and it works GREAT!)
Gigahertz shmigahertz... don't fall for Intel's marketing making you think that more gigahertz somehow means faster. Now go buy that Mac and feel spayshul.
Time for truth: Why Apple's new iMac ISN'T 'flat-out cool' excerpts: Apple also misses the point by not allowing users to have two drives. I find it very convenient to be able to copy files from one CD to another without having to copy them to the hard drive first. Apple's unwillingness to support this is a major shortcoming. .. Despite Apple's reputation for innovation, its most outrageous designs don't sell. Steve Jobs's cube-shaped CPUs from two years ago reportedly still fill warehouses (those that haven't been scrapped), and iBook sales didn't take off until the machine was redesigned to look like a traditional laptop. ..
You can boy an external drive for $150. Working it into the design of the IMac would have raised the price by $300. You can criticize anything. This is small beans...IMHO.
Doesn't that defeat the purpose of the new design? I watched all of Jobs' presentation and they made it an issue of how everything is inside the base and the lack of clutter of the new design. OS
Pretty flatscreen: +10 points Unmodifiable System unit: -10 points Value of new iMac to me: null But when were Macs for geeks anyway? They make a great looking, niche product for a niche market. Kudos on what looks like a nice new design. Kudos on suckering iMac users into buying a new monitor every time they buy a new iMac - it increases their profit potential.
See, I'm not sure I give a **** about modifying my system. 99.9% of the work I do is software-based and I can upgrade that in a heartbeat. The only hardware I've added is ancillary - memory upgrade, external hard drive for backing things up, etc. I work on my computer all day long and make a good living from it. The bottom line is that there are Mac lovers and Mac haters. There are very few who can respect and appreciate both platforms - personally, I don't have a problem with either, but you can only have my Mac when you pry it from my cold dead fingers.
Also, who but a GEEK would need multiple drives? I know that in most recording studios they use multiple external, removable drives for moving large hunks of data from one place to another, but multiple CDR's? Of course, all the recording studios use Mac's also.
