I guess because he's cheap and buying him out early would cost little. He can't be blamed for all of their problems but, IMO, the guy is clearly mediocre at best.

Cavs give coach Brown two-year extension
    Associated Press

CLEVELAND -- Cavaliers coach Mike Brown received a two-year contract extension Monday that will keep him with the club through the 2010-11 season.

Brown is in his third season with the Cavaliers, who won their first Eastern Conference title last season before they were swept in the finals by San Antonio.

His contract was to expire after the 2008-09 season. Cavaliers general manager Danny Ferry and owner Dan Gilbert had been discussing an extension since the summer.

The Cavaliers (19-18) have had an up-and-down start this season, with restricted free agents Anderson Varejao and Sasha Pavlovic holding out in contract disputes and superstar LeBron James missing six games because of a finger injury.

I can't remember what specifically happened, but I remember certain plays in the post season last year that I thought were very suspect calls by Brown. I remember thinking then how poor of a coach I thought he was.

Buuuut, results are results. Lebron's brilliance last year garners a payday for Brownie.

This move surprises me. As the previous poster pointed out, he has repeatedly shown a glaring lack of offensive creativity. I would've extended him for one year at the most based on the team's success last year ... but what happens if LeBron decides to move out of Cleveland?

They gave an assistant coach the money rather than find a guy out there who can get it done. The Cavs are a pretty incompetent organization that has made no good moves in last 3 years to surround LBJ with some talent and support. They overpaid Larry Hughes who is nothing close to what he was in DC and Big Z is just a waste of money. 22 million on 2 guys that aren't even all-stars. Should have kept Boozer trade the rest for a decent bench and some role players. Oh well Lebron won't stay there for long to suffer the mediocrity of mismanaged franchise.

I think its a mistake as well. Danny Ferry and Brown are going to lead them into mediocrity with so many terrible contracts and average players. In fact, it is already showing this season.

When lebron opts out of his contract, its going to get ugly pretty quickly. I think Steven A. Smith was saying a few nights ago on game night that Lebron was already planning for his exit with LA and NY being one of his preferred selections.

I'm sure with a different coach, they would've won the championship last year.

Or maybe they would been a teensy bit competitive and lost 4-2 instead of 4-0. That NBA Final was such a letdown even David Stern publicly admitted he was disappointed and that it wasn't good for the league.

it was so much coaching as it was the spurs being so good and the cavs only consisting of labron and others.

Or maybe they wouldn't have made it at all. They shouldn't have gotten past Detroit. The series being a letdown has to do with the Eastern Conference sucking, not the coach of the Cavs.
