Microsoft's Silence at CES Could be the Start of a Tough Year for the Xbox

I think the guy goes overboard with a number of his statements and was generally too negative. For example, it isn't really a big deal that MS was quiet at CES, especially since they may have some major announcements at GDC, which is next month IIRC (and BTW, the other two weren't exactly making big announcements either). Maybe he was just using that as a way to prove his overall point (Xbox might struggle this year and beyond?), but that certainly wasn't a good way of doing that IMO. Of course, that's exactly what the title of the thread says, but that's because I was too lazy to replace the name of the article.

I think he does raise some good points though. I think this year could be pretty big for the 360. I think if Microsoft can find answers to these questions (especially if doing so leads to success overseas), then they'll be well on their way to leading the market...well the "HD consoles" market anyway (although who knows what could happen at the right price point). However, if they don't, then I might start to wonder if the 360 would really see much more success than what the Xbox had.

Is this some sort of editorial or blog post? It's just...strange.

    like:

    lol...what?

This sounds like a NeoGAF fanboy post.

I was at CES, I don't think people really cared too much about console gaming there. its more about newer products and technologies.

The big buzz at the Microsoft booth was Surface.

The goofy rolly thing at the Sony Booth got way more attention than MSG4 or any PS3 game.

It is supposed to be a feature piece at GameIndustry.biz, although as pointed out, the guy doesn't seem to be very objective. The actual name of the article is "The Road Ahead," which it isn't very descriptive. I can see the point in discussing what the 360 has accomplished so far and what it has yet to accomplish (and how/why it can accomplish those things). That might be what the writer was attempting to do, but instead, he seemed to dismiss a lot of the good things while focusing on the "bad" things and overreacting on those issues (like the CES stuff). That might be a good way to get some hits though.

FWIW, I didn't really see a problem with the comment you quoted, although I'm assuming that he meant unseating the PS2 as the mass market gaming machine of choice. I took it to mean that the PS2 is a system that appeals to hardcore and casual gamer alike, is successful in every region, has a diverse game library, etc., and that the 360 has yet to reach that point yet. Of course, if he meant unseating the PS3, then yeah, that comment is really bad. The PS3 is more similar to the 360/Xbox than previous Playstations at this point (EX: the PS3 has mostly "cars and guns" games as well). Like the 360, maybe it will change in the future, but that remains to be seen.

yeah, it is a game, but more people were all around the rolly. As I mentioned before, CES is not for console showcase, its more new products that wow the crowd.

you should have given me your resume, those dudes would be overly impressed with your brand loyalty. :)

dude. its a dancing mp3 player with bluetooth and flash memory. retails for $350 for the 2 GIG version. take that Iphone!!

Have to agree with Rokkitt, this guy really sounds like a fanboy. Not really shocking when you see some of his past articles on Eurogamer. the 360 seems to be doing fine business, and I really don't see any reason why it won't continue to do so.

    I've always thought this:

Although I always thought of the 'cars and guns' demographic as 'typical American gamers'. And I thought that was the niche MS was trying to capture because their attempts at the other end of the spectrum- the 'thinking' games like strategy and RPGs are woefully weak.
