This is not a rumor, just a wild thought.

The Rockets trade Francis, James, Snyder and Wells to the Clippers for Cassell, Maggette and Powell. The Clippers cut a player or throw another scrub into the deal to make room.

    The trade works financially: http://games.espn.go.com/nba/featur...497~2197&teams=12~12~12~12~10~10~10&te=&cash=

The Clippers are going nowhere and have long been looking to move Maggette, who doesn't get along well with Dunleavy. They would be getting two PGs and two swingmen for a PG approaching retirement and a disgruntled SG/SF that was sure to leave at the end of his contract next season. Powell and anyone else would just be fillers.

Cassell is almost finished at his age but would be a good backup for a team that has playoff aspirations. He would also be a good mentor for players like Brooks and Head.

Maggette could get plenty of minutes backing up both McGrady and Battier. He would give us more athleticism as well as a true slasher that gets to the line consistently. He would provide more offensive balance as a perimeter player that doesn't rely solely on outside shooting even though he is more than capable of hitting mid-range shots. He is a deadly option off the bench and a very capable replacement for an injured McGrady.

    This could be our rotation:

    Alston/Cassell/Brooks
    McGrady/Maggette/Head
    Battier/Maggette/Novak
    Hayes/Scola/Landry/Powell
    Yao/Mutombo

Maggette has value around the league... and as far as I can tell, none of the players we're sending out here do.

Sure, they might want to move Maggette, but they can do better than our dregs.

Look at it this way. Francis is unreliable with his injuries. James holds on to the ball too much and is in a big shooting slump. Wells has a player option but so does Maggette.Snyder has been a huge disappointment. The Clippers may be better off tanking for another high pick and get a PG in the draft. It might be possible to get Cassell but I feel that they will look for better offers if they want to trade Maggette.

BrooksBall, I love your enthusiasm, but I want to remind everyone of a simple trade proposal guideline:
The most important thing when proposing a trade is arguing it from the other team's standpoint.
The fact that Maggette doesn't get along with his coach isn't enough. He has value to a lot of teams in this league, many of whom have more to offer than the Rockets. In a trade scenario, both teams need to benefit, and I just don't see that here. And an injured, possibly washed up Steve Francis doesn't exactly help out LAC. Nor does a Mike James who has forgotten how to shoot the ball.

Wells is better than Magette, esp. under Adelman.

I wouldn't mind trading away SF/MJ for Cassell, but that's highly unlikely

Honestly, let's not temper with the chemistry that is finally developing. I wouldn't be against dumping MJ (Steve's on a vet minimum so there's no need in dumping him), but Bonzi is a big part of the bench and should stay. He could be a force in the playoffs with his rebounding. If Wells were actually playing last year, we might have gotten those defensive rebounds that would have made a big difference in the outcome of the Utah series.

I also made this point: The Clippers would be getting two PGs and two swingmen for a PG approaching retirement and a disgruntled SG/SF that was sure to leave at the end of his contract next season.

Did you fail to read that part?

I could have elaborated more by pointing out their need for PGs since Cassell is oft-injured and Livingston is on the shelf. I could have also pointed out that Knight and Dickau suck.

Still, I did mention more than Maggette's disposition as reasons this trade may help the Clippers. I figured most people knew how bad the Clippers are and how much they are in need of guards and scorers.

I'll take Maggette over Wells today, hands down.

The only real value in this trade scenario is Maggette. Cassell is an old man now that serves little value to a non-playoff team.

I don't think it would take as much as people think to get Maggette.

We can work a deal that doesn't involve any of our key players.

If they don't want Francis, offer them Head, James, Snyder and Wells plus a future 2nd round pick.

Cassell and Maggette can do a lot more for the Rockets than they can do for the Clippers. Cassell is likely in his last run and Maggette will be leaving the Clippers either way.

How much of a better deal can they get for Maggette? I don't recall many big offers for him other than the Ron Artest rumors last season. I don't think Dunleavy would want Artest even if it was an option.

Miami was talking James Posey and old man Walker at one point.

The Pacers and Clippers were actually considering a Dunleavy Jr. for Maggette deal just last season!

Juniors's playing better than Maggette this season. Senior wants to coach his son and he simply doesn't get along with Maggette.

Nobody wants to send us real players for our castoffs. When our guys are in a race to see who will have the most DNP-CDs, they are not going to bring back a player the caliber of Maggette.

So what you are saying is that they want to trade for 2 PGs who are even worse than their current bad PGs, one of which has a terrible contract. For everything bad you can say about knight and dickau, at least they pass the ball to kaman, mobley and magette.
