Planning a weekend trip for the month of April. Was wondering if anyone could offer any advice on where to stay and not to stay. Looking to book through expedia. Any other helpful information would be greatly appreciated.
I've stayed at a few places in Cancun and the better hotels were Riu Palace Palace Resort Both are nice and have great beaches, but no matter where you stay the food is very disappointing in Cancun to say the least.. IMO the better overall hotel is Riu they offer more dinning choices and the rooms are nicer..
Cancun is a little too clichéd for my taste. I’ve also heard it can be dangerous. We’re going to Maya Riviera next month and staying at the El Dorado Royale. I am counting the days…. Where ever you decide to stay, check out unfiltered customer reviews here. I'll never stay anywhere until I check it out on Trip Advisor first. Have fun!
ive traveled all over mexico, from the big, bad mexico city to small little indian villages in the mountains and i can honestly say that houston is far more dangerous than anywhere i have been in mexico. i have never felt threatened or in danger anywhere in mexico and i certainly cant say the same about houston. im sure you can put yourselves in positions where bad things can happen, but if you exercise simple common sense you shouldnt have any problems in mexico. as for cancun, if you are into all that senor frogs type stuff you will love it. if you want to party w/ a bunch of american kids thats the place to go. otherwise, i would avoid that place like the plague. and its way more expensive than america - a buger, fries and coke at burger king was like 9 bucks. bottled water at the convenience store will cost 3 or 4 bucks. the beaches are very nice though, but i would go playa del carmen or somewhere else along the mayan riviera. xel-ha is worth checking out (about 1 hour south of cancun) - it can best be described as eco-schlitterbahn - very cool place. we did a day-long tour for about $100 that picked us up at our hotel in cancun, took us to xel-ha and than tulum.
My wife and brother stayed at the Moon Palace resort. It was all inclusive and I was it told that it had the best food and drinks out of all the cancun resorts. http://www.palaceresorts.com/Resorts/MoonPalace/Index.asp They booked it through Costco.
i would recommend Grand Oasis Resort/Hotel in Cancun....its a really nice place...big all inclusive buffet where the food is not great..but according to Cancun standards its not bad...also the beach thats is in front of is beautiful
if you want to say in the hotel zone, i find there is really 3 sections. the area is shaped like the number seven. if you look at the top of the seven that area is really crowded and loud, tons of nightlife etc... you get a very young crowd in the area. the very bottom of the seven is more quiter almost no clubs and very few restruants outside of hotel establishments. you get a more honey moon feel in this area. the middle of the seven you get kind of a blend of both. my preference is the bottom but's that's what we like. when it comes to beaches the top side are more calm almost lagoon like because "isla mujeres", island about 1 mile offshore, stops alot of the big ocean currents. beaches on the bottom side are a little rougher. for example my kids had a little trouble in the south beaches. also the north beaches are a little more crowded compared to the south beaches. again the middle is a mix bag. here is a map showing the layout, http://www.cancun-map.com/images/cancun-map.gif also there is bus service all the way up and down the hotel zone very cheap so you don't need a car. if you do rent a car i suggest you drive south to puerto morelos, playa de carmen, puerto aventuras. there are a bunch of little authentic mexican seaside communities. also puerto morelos and playa de carmen have ferries to cozumel if you want to hit that island. it's about $10-15 a ticket and about 45min. they run about 5am-midnight. they have beer/drinks on the ferry
several times - but just in passing - if im busing it we will drive to the border, walk across and stay there for the night before starting our journey to the interior. last time i was there there were tanks in the street. still safer than many parts of houston though.
Just wanted to say thanks for all of the suggestions. I've never been to Mexico accept for Matamoros and Juarez. I"m expecting Cancun to be a little more safer feeling than both of those places I'm 27 and going with a female acquaintance. I think a little partying and a a little relaxation are what we are both looking for. Did most of you guys fly Continental when you went or did you go Aeromexico?
but they also have chupacabras. i may be stretching it to say i felt safe in nuevo laredo last time i was there - drug dealers had killed the chief of police a couple days before we got there, which is why the tanks and mexican military were out. it was kind of eerie and quiet - we were just passing thru though. but other than that, the rest of mexico is very pleasant.
