Limited mistakes/turnovers. He managed the game well, protected the ball and had his team in position to score. The Titans were trying to pound the ball and keep the score low and the Chargers offense off the field. They just happened to leave at least 6 points on the board in a game where the difference was really a TD. Compare that to his counterpart (Rivers) who was moving the ball more but had costly mistakes to kill drives.
Costly mistakes? Rivers threw one INT and fumbled the ball once (which the Chargers recovered, anyway). How does that translate to more mistakes than VY? Last time I checked, Rivers also had a TD pass as well. And SD missed a 45-yard FG in the 1st half, meaning they left 3 points on the board. Heck, if you want to be technical, Rivers threw an INT in the endzone from the 42-yard line, so there's some more missed points, too.
LMAO. Same thing I was about to post. Yesterday, Collins would have given the ex-Oilers a better chance at a W. Young can't run, and him staying in the pocket trying to pass = FAILURE.
I just figured it out. Icehouse is Vince Young!!! Actually, I don't even think Vince Young himself would defend his performance this game or this season as much as some people here. And that's hopefully my last VY post ever. After two seasons since the 2006 draft, there's no question in anyone's mind that knows anything about football that Mario was by far the best pick. That's not to say it can't change down the road, but at this point, there really isn't a debate. For those who want to argue playoff appearances, remember this number...32.
I'm not going to defend the performance although I don't think it was that bad. vince had them in position for two more scores actually, a fumble inside the ten and a missed field goal really hurt. I was disappointed in the way he came out after the lt touchdown, he was inaccurate then. as far as rivers is concerned, he looked good, but he definitely has the better recieving corp and offense in general and considering the titans were missing one of the starter of a pretty weak receiving corp to begin with, and two linemen, and playing on the road, it was pretty good of them to even be in that game.
Exactly. No one is saying he played great but he didn't play like garbage. The game plan was to pound the ball, run clock and keep the score low. In a game like that it's crucial that your QB have limited mistakes. He got his team in scoring position 4 times...the same amount as the other QB. http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/drivechart?gameId=20080106024 It's not his fault his RB blew one and the FG kicker blew another...in an 11 point game.
A true leader wouldn't let either happen. He sucks penis. Oh well. David Carr would have been better.
He managed zero first downs in the 4th quarter and they had the ball all of 8 minutes in the entire second half. That, my friend, is a failure.
Young's injury may have a lot to do with that. Also, running quarterbacks not named Mike Vick tend to get beat up by NFL defenses.
again im still happy titans made it to playoffs and got vince some experience. He had a rough year, but still made strides in his overall improvement despite some injuries. hes got a lot of work ahead of him, and he can really improve in the offseason. Some better WR's will definitely help. I do think in the long run either the Jeff Fisher style of offense has to change or Vince needs to be able to/know how to audible plays a lot for Vince to be effective.
Might want to ask the Tampa Bay defense about that one. The same defense that hurt VY this year I believe.
I saw this, got a chuckle out of it, and figured this would be the best place to add insult to injury.
Except for the Giants having more in the tank than I thought (I knew they were a better team than TB, but thought they would be flat), 1st round went what I expected (3-1). VY played fine--Big Ben or Eli would have been thrilled if they played as composed their 1st playoff experience. He kept playing after fierce hits and played well until desperation time. Those of you who think he held the Titans back don't know much about football. His mobility really helped in them being able to get some key 1st downs in the 1st half and he was accurate. Now in the 2nd half he wasn’t playing as well, then again his oline crumbling in the 2nd half and they had zero downfield threats (I can bring back what ya'll were saying about Eric Moulds one year younger if I need to keep you honest) against one of the better playing defenses right now. Overall he didn't play great, but he certainly can hold his head up and there is nothing to suggest he won't be a good pro QB from what happened in that game, or most of this season. I know a lot of you guys here crave not having perspective about him/them, but the Titans had a great year relative to their rebuilding expectations (very young players, great cap number to add pieces) and injuries, and VY did fine in his 1st playoff experience. The Titans front seven, VY, and the Titans Oline are a heck of lot positive to build with—now they got to improve their secondary and add skill position playmakers at WR, TE and/or RB. Now on to next week, "How Bout Them Cowboys" (warming up).
a good NFL QB's most important ability should be the ability to make a throw when needed, he doesn't have to pass for 300 every game or three TDs, but he be able to make throws when needed. If the only ability he offers is running, why not just let a RB run the offense?
He completed a respectable 62% of his passes this year. If you watched closely there have just been a handfull of bad throws/reads the last few weeks when the Titans playoff/season was on the line. He made the vast majority of plays that could be made. Now, if he starts missing open guys than his team will be worried--that wasn't the case for anyone with an honest eye on the Titan's offense. And again, Go Cowboys!
Big Ben was composed. And he won the Super Bowl. Eli was forced to do what Young was in his first couple of play-off games. Beat the other team. They werent going to let the running game do it. In his third play-off game, he played out of his mind and beat a very solid Tampa Defense. And those crappy receivers Vince had to throw to this year?? Kerry Collins took those same receivers and threw it up and down to put up 38 pts on the Texans. Including a game winning drive with less than one minute. He also took over after Young left the Indy game and led them to that win. Sometimes a great QB can make an average receiver better than he is(Alvin Harper, Brandon Stokely, Az Hakim spring straight to mind).
The Titans scored more than 20 points with Young at starting QB twice. Once was against the Chiefs and once in his game of the year against the Texans. Not surprising that Young does his best work against Houston. Must be personal. The Titans appear to want to play Dungy-Ball from Tampa pre Gruden era. Which will (depending on ball bounces over the course of the season) win you anywhere from 8 to 11 games per year. But that system is the least reliant on the QB than any other "offensive" system in use today. This system also was employed by the Ravens in 2000 when they got the old TB QB Dilfer. If Young was having these same numbers but the Titans were scoring more than 15 ppg the criticisms would probably lessen. Sure you would have those super haters but most would let bygones be bygones if the offense he was running was successful. Not the team, but the offense.
