If bad checks are your problem, deffinitely look into Telecheck. I don't think any business should be without it.

There's a setup fee, and a small maintenance fee, but otherwise, they get their money from collections. If a check meets their standards, and they approve it, they guarantee the check. You don't have to worry about trying to collect from the customer.

i'm an attorney who does a great deal of debt-collection for small businesses...is it unethical for me to market my services here?

If you have their driver's license number, you can file a complaint with the sheriff's office. When they come across the guy, he can either pay you or go to jail. It takes a while, but you don't have to pay guys like MadMax. ;)

    Juan -- I resent that!! :)

If it's breach of contract or sworn account, you win your attorneys' fees, anyway!!! So you pay me nothing...the jackass who didn't pay you ultimately pays me by court order!

I was on the wrong end of a collection agency once, and it actually really annoyed me.

I was out of town and had an accident, and ended up in an ambulance. My insurance was willing to pay for it, but wanted certain information sent to them. I sent a nice letter to the hospital involved saying this, and initially they said that was fine. But then, I received a nasty letter from a collection agency telling me to remit payment in full! I called the collection agency, and they said the letter wasn't their concern. I called the hospital, and they said it was out of their hands.

I called the collection agency back, and they said that it was the hospital's business to send the information to my insurance company. After several nasty letters, and threats of legal action, I ended up paying it all out of pocket. Really made me mad .

For shame! Advertising your services on an internet message board? The level that some attorneys will sink to. ;)

    :D

no offense, but this has to be the funniest thing I've seen all day. It just somehow seems... right. Perhaps we should have some sort of cc.net 'guess the profession' game, but I guess the profiles would ruin that. It'd be intresting to see who fits and who doesn't.

    otto --

ultimately, i'm just a businessman, like a plumber or any other service provider. if rockets03 had said, "man i can't stand the pipes in my house...they're always clogging, and I'm at my wit's end with them...does anybody know a good plumber or some other professional who can help me?" -- would you blame a plumber for speaking up and saying, "hey..i do that stuff all the time."??? notice i never started a thread here and marketed my services...i simply responded when someone had a need that I fill daily for many clients. I really don't see that as much different from the cocktail party situation where someone speaks up and says, "hey, i need some estate planning done...anybody know someone who does that?"

No, don't get me wrong. I have no problem with you doing that. I just didn't know you were a lawyer, but based on your personality as it is filtered through what you post, if I had sat down and tried to figure out what you did, this would have eventualy been my guess. And, by no means am I attempting to convey anything deragitory. My father's a lawyer, I spent some summers working for Baker & Botts in HS, and I do network support for a number of law offices. You just have that 'it' that sort of defines their personalities, which I can't quite articulate.

The whole point of a forum like this that you are integrating your personal experiences to articulate yourself, and your professional experience came up here naturaly. It's not like your trying to pull a Jim Addler type emotional appeal to sue. It's no different than me posting the answers to other people's computer questions. Your poost helps them more than you. I didn't intend to insult you or anything. If I did that I apologize. I hope that you will continue to respond.

otto -- no..clearly i just misunderstood you. certainly no hard feelings. i've always found you to be one of the most fair people here, despite the fact we disagree on a variety of issues.

interesting point...i had friends from high school tell me, "i just can't imagine you as a lawyer." so i guess it's all in perspective. i've known since the 7th grade that i either wanted to be second baseman for the astros or have my own law practice...since biggio seems to have the first locked up, i was stuck with law schoo and hanging out my shinglel! :) i'm not sure why i was so enamored with the law...no one in my family is a lawyer...i'm not into the whole LA Law-television law approach of rambo tactics in mercedes-benzs. Ultimately, at the end of the day, I feel like I help people, and that gives me some sense of satisfaction.

but i'm still curious as to what that "it" is!!
