Texas running back Charles to enter NFL draft
Co-defensive coordinator Mac Duff leaving as well

    http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/front/5420761.html

Texas running back Jamaal Charles said Wednesday he will skip his senior year and enter the NFL draft.

"UT is a wonderful place and everyone has been so good to me. But, playing in the NFL has always been my dream and when the NFL report came back, I was happy with the grade and felt like it was best for me to enter the draft," Charles said in a statement.

Charles, who led the Big 12 with 1,619 yards this season, said he planned to return for his senior season after the Holiday Bowl on Dec. 27.

"Now, it's my job to get ready for all of the NFL workouts and make everyone proud. I may be going to the NFL but I'll always be a Longhorn. I'm definitely going to continue working towards my degree. Finishing school is really important to me because I want to have a good life after football."

Charles' rushing total this season was the fifth-highest single-season total in school history.

Also, co-defensive coordinator Larry Mac Duff stepped down after only one season.

"Larry and I met this morning and he informed me that he is not returning for the 2008 season, citing "philosophical differences," coach Mack Brown said.

The Longhorns gave up a school-record yardage total for the second straight season.

    Dammit.

I was hoping Texas would enter next season with top 10 status - the loss of Charles is going to put a huge dent into that plan.

Charles has flipflopped more than Jay Marriotti on "ATH"

He said he would only leave if he could be guaranteed to be a first round pick. I guess he got those "assurances" from "people in the know"

Good luck JC - here's hoping you get drafted by the Detroit Longhorns.

^ no need to blame the kid. He said he was coming back earlier, because that was what people wanted him to say and that was probably the right answer back then. He outperfomred expectations then he sat down and evaluated his optons and realized how high his stock was, to the point where it wasn't going ot get much higher.. It's not like he has much to accmplish left in college aside from individual accolades at this point. He's already got a title. He's assured by people (probably the NFL's own scouting service which does this for underclassmen) that he has a first round shot. You'd do the same if you were him.

I really hope he didn't get some bad advice. One last year would have done him well. I just can't see him being a first round pick. 1st day? Maybe. 1st round? Highly doubtful. Does he really project right now to any more than a kick returner? He is not a 25 carry per game back in the NFL.

This VERY MUCH opens up the door for Darrell Scott to sign with Texas and have a spot from day one.

Todd McShay, of Scouts Inc., wrote earlier today that he should stay in school because if he improved bulk over the next year he could be a first day pick in 2009. I can't see him going in the first round.

You're right - I don't mean to blame Charles at all. Given his opportunity - I would jump at the NFL immediately - rather than risk injury at the NC2A level.

This just stings after a tremendous performance in the Holiday Bowl and watching Jamal come of age in the past 6 games to overcome his fumbling issues and actually become a workhorse back that carried the team on his shoulders.

I had some VERY high hopes for next year.

He does seem to need to bulk up a little but I bet his 40 time will have scouts drooling.

crap. He could have put himself in position to be a top 5 pick next year if he would have stayed.

I don't think they like fumbles in the NFL.

people said he was too small, he bulked up
people said he didn't run up the middle (which was always false) he began working on that.
he got benched for fumbles, he cut those out

one thing charles did at ut was improve year over year, even staying healthy

I agree, Charles will be a good NFL back. Maybe the Texans can trade their 18th pick for a later first rounder and pick up a 2nd so we can draft either the best OT or S with one pick and Charles with the other

his stock is highest now, i doubt he's going to pull these 200 yard 4th quarters next year.

Running backs have such a short career in the NFL that it only makes sense to get there as soon as possible in order maximize your playing career. Playing one less college season gets you at least one more pro season and more money.

    On Darrell Scott

Scott is ranked the top player in California, the top running back, and 4th best prospect by Rivals. Hopefully the Horns can get him.

he's never going to be darren mcfadden, that's just the way it is. He has too many "issues" right now. He could work them all out, lets say he rushes for 1,700 yards, stays healthy, gets 15 tds and only 4 or less fumbles. where does he get drafted?

draft position is an issue, if he can go from third or fourth round, it makes a huge difference that he might not make up just playing one extra year. I don't have a problem with him going, but understand the argument to stay.

I would do the same if I were Charles since his stock is damn high right now. Jamaal is the thottest RB right now after Darren McFadden, and I wouldn't be surprised to see him run a 4.3 at the combine. Bad news for me though as a Horn fan.
