"Futurama" gets new life on Comedy Central

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - "Futurama" has a future.

Comedy Central has resurrected the former Fox animated series from "The Simpsons" creator Matt Groening and David X. Cohen. At least 13 new episodes will be produced -- the first since the series' original run from 1999-2003.

The new batch is part of a deal the cable network made with 20th Century Fox Television last year to pick up syndicated rights to the existing "Futurama" library of 72 episodes. Comedy Central also had an option to air any new episodes produced.

New and old episodes will begin airing in 2008 on Comedy Central. Actors Billy West, Katey Sagal and John DiMaggio have agreed to return as voices for "Futurama."

"We are thrilled that Matt Groening and 20th Century Fox Television have decided to produce new episodes of 'Futurama' and that Comedy Central will be the first to air them," said David Bernath, senior vice president for programming at the network.

"There is a deep and passionate fan base for this intelligent and very funny show that matches perfectly with our audience, and it is great that we can offer them not just the existing library but something they've never seen as well."

"Futurama" isn't the first series to return to air after cancellation. The Fox animated series "Family Guy" returned to the network last year after getting a second wind on DVD and late-night cable.

    sweet indeed.

I knew it was fairly popular amongst the interweb fanboys....but I didnt think it had quite the cult follwing that Family Guy had.

Good to see that FG set the precedent for them to follow in this case....now if someone (SciFi, Im looking at you) would resurrect Firefly from the Fox rejects bin...I would be happy indeed. ;)

oh yea...someone bring back Dark Angel also.

I'm a big fan of Futurama. You can catch the show late nights on the cartoon network if I'm not mistaken. They also play Family Guy as a part of their Adult Swim programming.

For those that don't know and are fans, Futurama moves to Comedy Central starting tonight at 7. The new episodes will come in a few months, after they run through the first 72 episodes. The way I heard it, they actually made 3 movies on top of "Bender's Big Score" and cut them into 30 minute episodes.

When will someone resurrect Arrested Development? Or have some of the stars become too big for it?

Did this happen because of the writer's strike? I ask because I heard that the animated shows have a different set of contracts, so this might be the network's way of getting around the strke.

Well, if you look at the original post in this thread, the agreement was made back in June (as was the post). So I'm going to go with NO on that one.

That must be why Adult Swim just had their 3 night Futurama marathon. They wanted squeeze out all the juice they could.

    Futurama - eh.

Firefly - I think it'd be tough to bring it back to TV format, especially since Serenity took and cleaned up what would have been the core of the TV series' direction and plots and took them to their end points. Mal-Nara, Book, Wash, River, Reavers, the blue-gloved feds, etc. Plus, the TV show itself was only just finding its legs. A second movie might be cool - but how much of a story is there to tell at this point?

Arrested Development - When Mitch Hurwitz decided it wasn't worth fighting off network interference anymore, he pulled the plug. Probably for the best. If it came back, expectations would be far too high. Bateman, Arnett, and Cera have breathed pretty good life into their movie careers - it'd be a hard sell to pull them back in. Not sure if this would work in movie form, despite the rumors.

I'm surprised it's Comedy Central and not Cartoon Network ([adult swim]).

That's where it was. Comedy Central won the rights to the new episodes and the entire library when they decided to bring it back. Fox had the right of first refusal...and they refused. With the new episodes, it really needed to be in prime time and they can't do that on Cartoon Network.

Futurama is one of the few animated shows that is covered by the WGA (Family Guy and The Simpsons are two prominent others).

The current president of the WGA is actually a writer/producer for Futurama.

Also, it takes a long time to make an animated movie. I doubt they knew there was going to be a strike when they started all this.

Cartoon Network also probably couldn't afford the new episodes.
