For you and any other slow readers on the board nowhere did I deny Tim Duncan's past excellence. Nor did I say he was not great. I only am stating the obvious. Their stats indicate they are closer this year. Hell in their 2 head-to-head meetings so far… Yao = 21 Points 11 Rebs 4 Assists 3 Blocks Duncan = 19.5 Points 11.5 Rebs 1.5 Assists 2 Blocks Yao clearly owned Duncan in the first game and Duncan outplayed Yao in the second but that was without Tmac so they could help Duncan out on Yao. So if you want to say this year Yao is not great at anything that's fine but if you want to say he cannot win a championship, well maybe you are barking up the wrong tree. Yao is a stronger presence in the mifddle than given credit for. Duncan isn't outplaying Yao by leaps and bounds and noone would ever say that about him. I am still a firm believer with the exception of rare occasions you need a big man to win a championship. This is not that occasion. Yao is arguably the best center in the league. So any suggestion you can't build a team around him is lunacy.
Well, we should all agree that TD>Yao at this point but i dont agree with the OP that we cant build around Yao. Comparing Duncan and Yao is pointless because Duncan got way more help than Yao had ever gotten. We should be patient with our big man. Big men usually hit their prime later in their careers because they use experiences rather than athleticism to dominate. We should all remember at what age did Hakeem got his first ring.
You took the words out of my mouth. Yao power is great! Even when he's playing against opponents with the huge help from these corrupt gambling NBA referees, he's still a 20/10 guy. Yao Power is GREATNESS!!!!!!!!
Have u actually watched or played any basketball before?? The difference between Yao and Rik Smits (in his all star years) is smaller then the difference between Yao and Timmy D.
yao does a horrible job of getting deep post position anyway. and remember against utah, they mostly used single coverage, and okur would just lock him up completely. yao is not a dominant force downlow.
Tim Duncan is a great athlete. He was an Olympic class swimmer. He would have been the no. 1 pick after his freshman, sophomore, or junior year. I think he shares some record for making the nba 1st team for the most consecutive years after being drafted. He is once in a decade type player. If the spurs didn't have him they would probably be mired in mediocrity like most teams, and maybe the Celtics would have multiple championships.
I'm not saying we should trade either, i'm just calling a duck a duck. looking at tracy's injury history, i dont think you can build around him. The celts knew Pierce and ray allen could get to the playoffs. but the goal is the ring. So they went and got Garnett. The yr Garnett made it out of the 1st rd, it was sam cassell taking the big shots and dominating at the end. After cassell left, they were a lottery team with a top 5 player in the league. the yr after trading shaq, the lakers went lotto land. The next 2 seasons, they have been a couple games over .500 and out in the 1st rd. Shaq went on to win a ring. I'm just saying its not a shame to modify this team and say we need the 3rd quality guy. i mean when you're top 3 players can account for 55-60 pts, then your team will be a whole lot better when one is struggling. Thts all i'm saying. Tracy is the straw that stirs this drink, but if yao can get his 20-10, and another guy can get a effecient 15ppg, this team would be deadly. That's the scenerio i would be looking at instead of trading one of them or relying on yao being more than what he is or tracy staying injury free. I think a guy like josh childress, magette or someone like that would work wonders for this team.
You must have missed the suns and rockets game 5 on NBA TV today. Perfect example of an all-time great being neutralized in the fourth quarter and his teammates having to make plays. Duncan has the teammates to make his job easier and who give him operating room. You think Duncan could have gotten all those accomplishments without them? Just look at Wade this season. Great player who doesn't have the teammates anymore. He turns the ball over more than Yao probably because he has to carry so much dead weight in that roster. EDIT: You're going to tell Shaq not to use Duncan and Yao in the same sentence too. When asked who the best low post players in today's game are he named Duncan and Yao. Darrell Armstrong was the leader of that team. He gets traded away and Tracy was made into the captain and the team went to s***. Doc Rivers even said as much. You don't want to see it. Fine. Thanks to the Philadelphia game I see it now. The Utah games in Utah. Game seven of the Dallas series. The signs have been there. I now see them. JVG was the leader of our team last year. Tracy McGrady stepped up but he didn't lead because there's no way he would have forgotten how to lead over the summer if he had led with the change to a player's coach.
the op can't more wrong. it's very typical yet wrong assessment on yao. one example. he's one of the few this season in the 20-10 club - while adjusting to adelman's offense and goes to high post a lot. that is a club that even td and kg don't belong to. this is a testament of his ability. yao does nothing great? then what is "great"? i believe his rebounding and block #'s are in the top tier, too; though i haven't looked at the stats. defense? why do you think the rockets have been the top interior defensive team since yao got here? coincidence? if you think only guys like hakeem in his peak years can be built wround with, then the truth is there just aren't enough of those guys. 30 teams in the league, fewer than 30 of this type of guys. btw, imo only wilt and hakeem qualify for the goat honor in bball (mj is a bit overrated in this dept.). however, if you put hakeem in today's situation where all the blatant fouls inside are usually not called and where the illegal defense is no longer illegal (where guys can double before a catch) etc., i suspect his efficiency will be noticeably reduced. but that's another topic.
You stated that Tim Duncan was not great in one particular category. I merely pointed out you were incorrect as he is great in MANY. Tim Duncan has been on a slight decline in the last few years while Yao is hitting his prime. I think a more fair comparison would be Yao and his next 3 years to Duncans prime years. And i wouldn't look at regular season numbers..... playoffs are the only time that matters
Tim Duncan is clumsy and moves awkward. And swimming is pretty much a girly sport. It reminds people of kids playing water fight. Tim Duncan would be nothing without good teammates from starters to bench players, and a good coach in Greg Popovich. Yao Power is greatness because Yao is still a 20/10 guy when he's playing against double and triple teaming opponents with the help of the corrupt gambling NBA referees. Yao Power = GREATNESS power
says the guy with the moniker "YaoYiPower" and 7 posts ... one more word and I unleash tinman on you..
Wow. First, Duncan is not a "horrible athlete." He is actually a very good athlete but to a casual fan who only measures athleticism on dunks he my appear average. Second, your claim that he is really just the beneficiary of a great system is stupid. Really, it is stupid. I don't think you have even watched the Spurs play because if you had you would not make such ignorant statements. Replace Yao with Duncan and San Antonio has zero rings. Duncan will go down as the best PF to ever play the game.
Why don't you take off from this site YOF mothe***** and let some old timers talk for a change. The reason why many of the old timers here do not post in the GARM anymore since Ming arrived is because of your YOF one liner garbage. Many of these guys have been ROX fan and have more BB knowledge than you YOF fan boys so let them talk in their forum without you sissies spewing your Ming is God trash. Some of us would like to know their opinions on the Rox situation since they have more history with the team than hearing you YOFs panty rants. so please do the forum a favor and you get lost!!
