Well, at 8-8, they have the same record as the Eagles, Cardinals, and Vikings. They will pick 16-18 depending on whatever the tiebreakers are with those other teams.
Derrrrrrrrrr, that should be "They will pick 16-19 depending on whatever the tiebreakers are with those other teams."
The first tiebreaker is based on strength of schedule. Which year, though? If it's based on 2006, then, according to ESPN, Houston had a tougher schedule than the Eagles, Cardinals, and Vikings and would thus get the LAST pick of all the 8-8 teams (#19?).
Why would it be based on 06, you mean 07 right? Edit - i see you do mean 07, but it woudl be based on their opponents records from this year, not last year, i'm pretty sure.
According to another message board... http://www.footballsfuture.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=168028&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0 ...we will have the 18th pick I don't know how legit this forum is so disregard if need be
I'm pretty sure we've had a tougher strength of schedule (by virtue of our division alone) than all of those other teams ... but I might be wrong about one of those teams (Minnesota/Philly).
http://www.gbnreport.com/weeklydraftorder.htm Looks like the 18th pick. I think these are the prospects for our 1st pick: What do you guys think?
I think if Dunta can't play shut down corner next year, you better get a DB. I know, I know, LT and we need a RB. But if we don't slow down Indy, we don't go anywhere. And somewhere down around the 5th we need a 350lb nose tackle to free up our studs. If we have a man-mountain in the middle they can't double on our speed (Williams and Okoye) or get a guard out on Ryans.
Ah, so the tiebreaker is based on strength of schedule from THIS year. That's what I originally thought.
I might take some heat for this, but I would love for us to shore up some offensive help. Trade down about 10 picks in the first and pick up a second rounder. Use the first rounder to grab up Limas Sweed, WR from Texas. He'll allow us to finally have a second threat at wide receiver, taking a lot of pressure off of Johnson. Use that second rounder to nab up an offensive lineman...preferrably a tackle. Then, in the third round, I think you go Safety. After that, anyone's guess. I think Fred Bennett is looking like a good pick, too, for what it's worth. He should make a solid second corner next year. I like our defense...we just need a year or two of experience to gel and become great.
Heat? When everybody is healthy, WR is one of the deeper positions on the roster. If they can find a way to gather another pick without too much pain, then it should be explored because there are still several holes to be filled. Over the years, Denver has been able to get productive running backs later in the draft. Perhaps the Texans will do the same and focus on Offensive Line, Corner Back and Outside Linebacker in the earlier rounds of the Draft. It pains me to type this, but they will probably have to spend another draft pick on a Defensive Lineman because Travis Johnson might be working his way out the door if he hasn't already been omitted in plans for 2008.
I don't think they go Defensive Line. I would suspect they go best available talent though. With probably the exception of WR, DL, or QB. Unlesss we're talking about someone so much more talented than anyone on the Texans or on the board remaining. I'd prefer for them to go out and get a premier dependable runner. Remember what the Texans did to start the season when they were counting on Ahmad Green. They started with 2 victories in a row. Then the injuries started. After the first 2 games Green was always always a question mark. If the Texans can run the ball, they can allow Kubiac to get creative with his play calling. They need an elite dependable runner!!!
The last thing we need is a WR. Sounds like the focus of our offseason is going to be secondary, OL, and RB. I'm not sure which areas they are going to try to get in the draft and which they are going to get in free agency, but if I had to guess it would be OL and secondary in free agency and RB in the draft simply on a learning curve basis for the respective positions. Marcus Trufant and Jordan Gross would be pretty good free agent additions and if we could get Jonathan Stewart or Felix Jones we would have pretty successful offseason.
i will guarantee that the texans either take a CB or OL, they won't go RB. We do need a RB, but they won't do it. when compared to our secondary our RBs had a good year. if Kenny Phillips(S from Miami) is still available at that pick we will take him, but he won't be. this draft is one of the deepest i have seen in years for the CB spot, and we will be taking either Mike(USF) or Malcolm(Ohio St)Jenkins, Aqib Talib(Kansas), or maybe reggie smith from OU if we trade down the pick. Thses guys are gonna be starters for whoever drafts them next year. i can't wait for the draft and next year, but it sucks we have the 18th pick.
Not defensive line early, but the Texans have been upgrading the roster over the past few years and they need to upgrade Travis Johnson's roster spot.
You can forget Kubiak drafting a RB in the 1st round. He spent too time in Denver under Mike S. That system features a unique blocking system that allows an average to good RB to excell. Add to that the fact that the career life of a RB is 5-7 years, why draft a RB in the 1st round when a 4th or 5th rounder will do nicely!
Our draft strategy will depend on what we do during free agency. If we fill our holes in the secondary through free agency then I imagine we will focus on the OL in the draft and vice versa.
