I really dont think there is anything special about P.F. Changs. It tastes like regular chinese food, but costs like it should be great. My favorite restaurant in Houston is either Ruggles 5115 (or something like that in the galleria - probably the best dessert in town) or Mark's on Westheimer. Went to Villone's on Kirby the other day for the first time and it was really good too, but not on par with those two. All of those restuarants are, unfortunately, too expensive to frequent often, though.
Without a doubt- Aldo's on Lower Westheimer. I was in the restaurant business for many years. I work with Tony Vallone, Mark Cox, Damien Mandola, Tony Rao, and a few others. Aldo El Sharif is the cream of the crop here in Houston, in my humble opinion.
Americas, definately, is the most underrated/least known place in Houston. Also, gotta love their cool Sigmund Freud "Cigar isn't a Cigar" decor.
I have a Timmy Chan's hat. I am a big fan of their "Syraberry" soda. But I am going with Mai's on Milam. cbfc
PF Chang's is really good and won't blow your budget, but it's a chain - there's one here in Florida. I'm sure, though, that Houston's got it's share of good uinque food, though.
Brisket House (Pappa's BBQ) Kelly's Texas Roadhouse is pretty good, but the only two are on the outskirts of town.
timmy chan's is very cheap and you get a lot of food. personally i think the buffalo wings are delish.
The one and only Mai's! Open till ungodly hours and has always been consistently yummy throughout all these years. other close 2nds----> Baba Yega-great atmosphere and a good menu for all kinds! House of Pies-one word: club sandwich (or is that two?) Wonderful Vegetarian Buffet-Yes thats right VEGETARIAN buffet...but its so damn good! Tony Mandola's on I-45 south- Shrimp I say! Shrimp! oh, and my backyard grillin' is really my most favorite!
I am thoroughly convinced that there are too many great restaurants in Houston to list on this thread. My New Year's Resolution is to make the smoothie bar in my gym my new favorite restaurant.
