Who has one? What do you think about it? I'm thinking about going from my Treo 700 to the iPhone, but I am having a hard time deciding. I would have to switch from Sprint. I have never had any problems with them and get a few decent discounts through them on my plan. I just don't like any of the PDA phones they have out right now. The Palm platform is getting old and I don't care for the Windows Mobile phones they have right now. I tried the Mogul for a month, but it was almost unbearable wih it's memory issues and I'm not really into the Blackberry. A couple of questions for the iPhone users: How is ATT's service in the Houston area? Is the internet really slow without 3G? I use EVDO right now and it's somewhat slow on the palm. How is the stability? Any crashes?
Hacked iPhone FTW! Seriously, it's the best damned phone I've ever had. As for an unhacked version, I'm not sure. Someone else may have to give you an answer. But there are sooo many cool apps you can put on the phone, it's crazy. I love it!
I have one and I really like it. I've had AT&T/Cingular from the beginning, so I can't compare services. Your specific questions: 1. I live in Austin, but when I was in Houston over the holidays I had no problems. 2. When connected to a WiFi network, it works flawlessly and fast. EDGE is pretty slow, unfortunately. 3. No crashes to report.
I have one, and I love it. Like A00man, mine is hacked to the gills. Despite Apple's lockdown of the iPhone, the dev community is thriving, as new and better programs are popping up everyday. And due to the popularity of the phone and the upcoming SDK release, I totally expect to see some major applications come out, like Slingbox. Not to sound like those insipid commercials, but I use the iPhone every day. I get all my email on it, including work. I watch movies at the gym. I hook it up to my car stereo during my commute. While my wife is looking for shoes or something, I use the iPhone to browse websites and play games. Once, at Best Buy, I even used the web browser to pricematch an item I was buying. Sure, other phones can do all of this (and probably more!), but not as easily, IMO. Coming from Verizon, I was very apprehensive about AT&T's service. However, service has been much better than expected. I've tried AT&T in Houston, New York, and San Francisco with nary a problem. In fact, in several months of use, I've only had one dropped call. (Maybe I'm just lucky.) Also, sadly enough, even with my 20% Verizon discount through work, the AT&T iPhone plan (I'm using prepaid, BTW) was still cheaper than a comparable smartphone plan with data. To answer your other questions: 1) If you stay with the stock iPhone (i.e. don't hack it), the phone is rock solid stable. If you hack it, you might get a few crashes here and there (or worse, depending on how adventurous you are). 2) The web browser is slow. Not terribly slow, but it is noticeable. Certain sites load faster than others (for instance, Clutchfans). On wi-fi, the browser flies (of course). If you want a faster browser, wait for the 3G iPhone due out sometime next year.
When does the 2nd generation of the iPhones come out? And is there any word on the upgrades it will have?
Total customization! For instance, I've got 5 icons at the bottom instead of the stock 4. (I moved the SMS icon down there.) I also moved my icons around and changed the battery life screen to something with actual percentages (and more visually pleasing). The other benefit is, of course, more programs! I've got chat, loads of games, a few emulators, a dictionary/encyclopedia, an RSS reader, an HP financial calculator, an internet radio app, and a GPS-like app integrated into Google Maps. I'm excited to see what the SDK will bring.
It is far less than our Gizmondo 2 was.....already. And we were Windows CE so all this hacking was unecessary. DD
I recently got an iphone. I need help with 2 things. 1. Can someone provide me with a step by step to make my own ringtones without having to buy them through itunes? I hear there are easy programs to do this if you have a mac, but I do not have access to a mac. 2. Can someone provide me with a step by step to have the ability to send mass texts and pictures without using email? So far I love the iphone, but it left off some items I used on my other phone (picture messaging, mass text, text forwarding, video capabilities, and bluetooth). I hear apple in the process of making updates that will include these capabilities, but as of now nothing (legally) exists.
If your iPhone is hacked: 1. Install "SendaSong" from Installer.app. Simply open that app and it'll have a list of all your songs. Choose any one of them, and you'll get the option to transfer it to a ringtone on the phone. 2. No possible way to send mass texts right now from my knowledge. I think Apple is working on this; possibly for their next update.
Not true. I believe the app "WeTool" can send out mass texts. As for MMS, there is an app out there in alpha form that can send MMS but not receive it yet. Forgot the name of it. I think it's just "MMS" or something like that.
iPhone is more of a multimedia/functional phone. If your looking for more business-centric features such as push button email...then go the blackberry route. I've had the iPhone for about 3 months now and this device is changing the way phone manufacturers are approaching handset design. Just look at the newest samsung and LG phones that are about to be released.... http://www.engadget.com/2007/12/27/samsungs-p720-f490-make-their-video-debut/
I won't be using the phone for business at all. My main uses are the phone, internet, email, google maps, and texting. The Treo does all of these well, but I'm just getting tired of Palm's inablilty to create a new OS. I've had the 600, 650 and now the 700p. All of them have been a little better than the previous version, but they are basically just putting out new handsets that are more stable, there are no new features to the phone. There are a ton of second party apps, but overall it is just a dull device. I'm thinking I'll probably go the iPhone route, but I'll wait for another couple of weeks after Macworld or whatever their conference thing is.
I Am posting on my iPhone now I am at the AT&T store and am getting my contacts tranferred I am having trouble getting the phone to grab an ip addy from my router any help would. E appreciated
I have a Blackberry, love it, can't imagine life without it and have no plans to change. But the beauty of it all is the iPhone will benefit everyone because of the scare it's success put into other manufacturers. When RIM creates a Blackberry with a bigger screen and better browsing capabilities, they will own me forever. Couldn't care less about the music.
I got it after the price drop and it is great. I had it hacked for a little while, now running 'normal' though. The downsides: Some functions I was used to on my old phone, such as MMS and mass texting, are not yet present. Luckily I fully expect this to change rather soon, but still it is a shame it is not there. 3rd Party apps in general. Obviously if you aren't hacked you don't have any. Though this will also change in 2008. No 3G. Though to be honest, EDGE was nowhere as near as bad as I was expecting. **** that took forever on my last Motorola is much, much faster even on EDGE. Other than that, it is amazing. I use it every day; great interface, easy to use, very full featured and the integration of the apps built in - such as Google Maps - is very well done (ties into contacts, email, webpages, etc.). The phone is just fun to use. And Mobile Safari is the best net browser I've ever used on a cell phone, period. As far as ringtones go, if you're on a PC I'm sure there are apps to help you but I don't know what they are. I recently switched to a Mac as well (it was an Apple summer, it seems) and they added the capability to Garageband for free. Excellent.
iphone changes your life. i'm serious, too. can't imagine living without it. but AT&T's network in houston is garbage...
