One of the most underrated shows in the history of television. Like hundreds of show, this show couldn't had been pulled off without either of the two main characters (Gomer Pyle and Sgt. Carter). I bought a couple years ago for $60 the entire show on DVD's. Like 70 episodes or something, maybe more.

It's all talent how a show can be as funny as it was without all the cursing and sexual content. I'm only 23 and I know I'm old fashioned compared to the younger people of today but they are really missing out if they haven't seen Gomer.

Just want to recall one of my favorite episods where Sgt. Carter and Gomer team up to go on a 5 day survival test. All they can eat is things they find in nature like some bark from trees, berries, and some edible plant roots. For water, they had to locate underground streams and extract the liquid from the mud, strain it and boil it and it'll be ok to drink. The other teams of 2 all ended up losing 5 or 6 pounds. Sgt. Carter chose Gomer to team up with because he just knew he couldn't survive without major help. So Gomer uses his country boy instincts like putting together a shoe string tied to a tree limb and sharped a keyring on a rock to create a hook and caught some fish, started a fire and cooked them. Set up a trap to catch a wild pheasant. Ended up with Sgt. Carter and Gomer GAINING weight all because of how easy this stuff came to Gomer.

Very good show and its a shame its not on TV Land anymore. Any other Gomer Pyle U.S.M.C. fans on this board? Some may be even too embarrased to admit it! Especially us young guys.

We didn't have cable when I was growing up (late '80s-'90s), so if I was up really late at night this was the kind of show I'd end up watching on Channel 20 or 26 (along with "That Girl," "Pump it Up" or "Beverly Hillbillies.") I actually think it's pretty sad that almost all daytime UHF Tv has devolved into spinoffs of either "Judge Judy" or "Ricki Lake." There's just something quasi-historical about a Bewitched, I Love Lucy or Monkees re-run.

As far as Gomer Pyle, I remember the one where Gomer and Sgt. Carter run into this Japanese kid who can't find his parents; and Carter understands the kid because Carter learned Japanese when he was stationed over there. Then Gomer, Carter and the kid are at a Washington Senators baseball game, the umpire makes a bad call and the kid starts yelling at him...in English. I think it turned out that the kids parents were just not spending alot of time with him, so he pretended to be lost and not know English just to get some attention. I think it was in color, so I'm assuming it was a later episode.

Not that this was a particularly good episode, but just the only I remember from start to finish. Pretty sure all the other ones are just Carter trying to do something or go out on a date while Gomer's goofiness creates a distraction and pisses him off.

i used to love that show. Sgt. Carter was the best and made that show, imo.

Remember the episode where Gomer had to go to Washington DC to sing and lost his voice? He sat on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial and suddenly was able to sing again. And that deep opera like voice coming out of his country ass mouth was pretty funny.

I'm a big Andy Griffith fan-- only live 45 minutes from Mt. Airy...

I can't help but think of the Mayberry episode where Barney and Gomer got list on a hike around the lake with the Boy Scouts. Barney was clueless and Gomer was helpless. Andy to the rescue... ;)

Try to find the Mayberry episode where Gomer actually goes off to join the Marines. Sgt. Carter is in it as well.

I like that one episode where Gomer does something dumb, and then Sgt Carter yells at him

As a little kid, I watched this show and Andy Griffith. Good, clean, goofy humor.

Miss Bunny was Carter's girlfriend and I don't remember much of an effort to link Bunny and Gomer on a romantic basis. There might have been an episode in which Bunny danced with Gomer to make Carter jealous - upset, but nothing romantic implied. Lou Anne (Luanne? or similar) was considered Gomer's girlfriend.

    You are correct.

Lou Anne Poovie was Gomer's "girlfriend". Here's a good site with a lot of info.
