What do you think of this list? http://gamespot.com/gamespot/features/pc/bestof_2001/p5_01.html 1. Serious Sam: The First Encounter 2. Max Payne 3. Civilization III 4. Return To Castle Wolfenstein 5. Commandos 2: Men Of Courage 6. Dark Age of Cemelot 7. Black and White 8. Nascar Racing 4 9. Operation Flashpoint 10. Wizardry 8
I got Civ III for Christmas and it's just a crappy historical version of Alpha Centauri. Don't know if it's the third best anything but I'm not too crazy about it now that I have it.
eh -- I've never really cared for gamespot's rankings -- I read it, but I'm not a big fan of their reviewers. I dunno -- I didn't think Serious Sam was all that great. IMO, Max Payne was much better . . . and no Conquest: Frontier Wars? For shame!
I don't really see much difference between Civ 2 vs. Civ 3 that it's worth buying Civ 3. I did end up buying it, though. I was one of the beta testers on Alpha Centauri and didn't really like that game much either. Civ 3 cheats so bad and the game bogs down so much in the end game, that it gets boring. What I like about the Civ series is its focus on the strategy rather than the eye candy. I'm sick of lame ass 3D games with no substance. Gamespot is a decent site and I read it if anything new comes out for an initial review, but newsgroups are the best place to gauge how good a game is. You get more and varied opinions.
I bought Civ3 at EB but returned it b/c I was disappointed. It's a fun game, but really it wasn't good enough to warrant purchasing -- I'll just go play Civ 2 and Alpha Centauri. I miss Cnet's GameCenter -- they used to have spot-on reviews and awards.
My computer can't handle Civ III (300mhz, 64mb RAM) and it was randomly closing at times; I think it was because CPU usage was 100% for hours at a time and the game was using 150+mb of memory. It was taking me 10-15 minutes per turn (not exagerating) on a huge map w/ 16 civs 1/2 way through the game. I liked it, though I've noticed some of the more hardcore players hate it. I have never played a complete game above Warlord in Civ II or Civ I (don't laugh).
I'm still playing Diablo 2. Don't I feel like an old f**k... I love Alpha Centauri. Will I also love Civ 3?
I have Civ III and like it ok. i agree though that it could use some unit balancing. There is now way a Pikeman should take out my tanks. The game is basically an update(graphically) version of Civ II with a slightly more user friendly interface. Another complaint is the no Multiplayer option. AS far as comparing it to AC I was not thrilled with it when it came out and the two games are fairly different.
I dusted off my copy of Diablo 2, bought the LOD Expansion and just defeated Diablo as a lvl 27 Sorceress. Now on to ACT V. It's not that old a game... especially with the expansion pack. You already have it. j/k... If you've played Civ 2, you already have Civ 3. It's somewhat similar to Alpha Centauri as well. If you don't have a machine in the gigahertz range with 128 or more MB of RAM, don't expect to have too much fun playing the larger maps... it bogs down. I have a 1.47 GHz machine with 512 MB RAM and it was still taking almost 1 minute between turns with 3 or 4 PC opponents... after a while that gets to be a PITA.
A buddy loaned me Soldier of Fortune: Platinum Edition. I'm not sure what year that came out but it's crap. os
Can't wait for Age of Mythology . My roommate has a friend that's one of the programmers for it. She seems genuinely proud of it, and is really excited about its release.
I don't know why but I really didnt like any of Sid's games after CivII. CivIII is ok at best and Alpha Centauri and Call To Power stunk - to me... I like RedAlert2 better than those. Is Diablo fun? I will try it out...
If you like running around killing things almost pointlessly, it's a click-fest that you'll like. If you're more into the C&C type strategy, this isn't it. Make sure you get Diablo 2. The original Diablo is ancient although I guess there wouldn't be any problems starting with it.
Thanks, guys. I think I'll skip Civ 3. I'll bet my 40th level Barbarian could beat your 27th level Sorceress, DoD... Is Age of Mythology part of the Age of Empires series, Gascon?
Probably could... lol. She's up to 31 now, btw... watch out! Yes... but if you want a game that is currently the "next in the AoE" series even though it's not made by Ensemble/Microsoft, check out Empire Earth. Pretty much AoE on a larger scale and 3D graphics. One of the guys on the EE staff was one of the people that helped create AoE.
I was very dissapointed by it. The new objective-based demo map for Medal of Honor:Allied Assault is lots of fun. I highly recomend it. The list that I liked the best was the gamespy.com game of the year awards. They list game of the year by genre for several platforms. I agree with what I know from the list so much that I am going to go out and get some of the ones I'm not familiar with. You can see the list here.
