RotoWire.com Staff - RotoWire.com Sunday, December 16, 2007 Update: Clemens might pitch again in 2008 despite being named as a user of testosterone in the Mitchell report, two unnamed people close to him told Newsday. Clemens has denied the allegations made in the Mitchell report. Recommendation: The sources told Newsday that Clemens may want to return in an effort to help his public perception after the report. He's also said to be leaning toward returning with the Astros. This report seems very speculative and it's still not a sure bet he'll pitch again next season.
what do you guys think??? Would you welcome him back even with the allegations made in the Mitchell report??? I wouldnt mind taking him back...he would be our number 2 or 3 man for sure.
Sure this isn't referencing his Personal Services contract? If he really wanted to come back, I would take him.
geez man... run away from the NY media why dont you. Houston's the one place where he wont be dogged for roids.
I was thinking about this the other day that he might consider pitching for the Astros. I think one of the reasons he left was that perceived that we were not trying hard to win. If Wade has done anything this offseason, its proved that we are trying to win now. I'd definitely welcome him back ... hes got an ego, but he can definitely help the team. I don't really understand the animosity some have toward the guy. He helped us win our first series ever and gave me some great Octobers recently. His winning attitude alone helps this team. Somehow, I just don't believe he is coming back though.
hell yeah, only thing think that would make me think twice is he bailed out to leave for NY the first time. All these steroid allegations are dumb.
I wouldn't touch him with a 10 foot pole if I were the Astros. Clemens was over the hill at 34 and 211 wins with the Sox and then goes to Toronto and wins two straight Cy Young's when Canseco becomes his teammate. He won over 160 tainted games after leaving Boston. Clemens is even more discredited and tainted by steroids than Bonds. Please, Roger. Pleeeeeeeease just disappear. I am sick and tired of reading about you. Take some medicine to cure your media addiction. We don't want you to "waste" another season with the Astros while earning $20MM.
i would GLADLY take clemens back. the only difference between clemens and the rest of the league (at least a big portion of it) is that clemens got caught.
Sure. Even with possible diminished skills, he'd immediately become the 2nd best pitcher in the rotation. Given that the astros acquired Tejada a day before the mitchell report i don't see why the steroids allegations would hold this up. Plus, I bet he'd be pissed off and determined to redeem himself from these allegations.
At this point he's just a distraction and a drama queen. I'm not saying he couldn't throw 10-15 solid to good starts, but for his price and baggage, that may not be worth it.
I'd take Pettite back...Clemens I'm not so sure because he was starting to break down just from half a season...we need a number 2 that can give us a whole full season of service. Maybe if we're still in contention at the halfway point...maybe.
He might not a number 2 at this point, but honestly i don't see a number 2 out there either in free agency or on the trade market (that the astros have a chance at getting). Even if he's not as good as he was 2 or 3 years ago, he would still help this pitching staff. Even 25 starts as a number 3 means 25 less starts out of woody williams or whoever is the #5 now.
The Astros organization got rid of all their class anyway. Why not? I won't be supporting them next season. Hopefully. My love of baseball is crazy, but I just can't support a team that classless (and I'm an Eagles fan).
How are they classless? The Mitchell Report indicated that all 30 teams had employed juiced players. Its like Sarah Silverman said "if everyone had AIDS, wouldn't it be kind of like no one had AIDS? when God gives you AIDS, make lemonAIDS." I still think they're viewed as one of the more classy organizations in baseball from a personel as well as from a competitive perspective. Having guys like Biggio and Bagwell as the face of your franchise for so long has its long term benefits. If Baggy juiced and you knew it while watching him have a hell of a career, wouldn't it still be fun to watch him? Playoffs aside anyway? Will baseballs ratings take a dip next season or will all of this attention actually help viewership? Hm.
