I never said they couldn't. It strikes me as a bit hypocritical when the same people flock to a Mao shrine and jump to his defense all the time, but no one is stopping them from protesting the Japanese (except maybe their own government).

Mao was an idiot. He implemented all the wrong policies. I agree that he should be reprimanded for being naive and stupid. But his goal was to improve China.

Japan implemented a systematic way throughout the late 19th century and the first half of the 20th century to try to eliminate China as a nation state and kill as many Chinese as possible in the most cruelest ways possible.

How can you blame the Chinese being more angry with the Japanese than with Mao?

Supposed the father of a family wanted to do something good for the family in a stupid way and got his son killed. Also supposed a serial killer came into the family's home and killed another one of his sons in the most cruelest way. Would you say the surviving family members are hypocritical to be angry with the serial killer because of the stupid thing that the father had done? Think.

I think I get your point. Every country has a dark side in their history so no one should complain about any atrocracy in history otherwise they would be hypocritical if they do that.

I am sure there have been other races of nationalities of people on this board who complained about the wrongdoings that had been done to their own people in history. According to your theory, they must be hypocritical too. Have you also jumped out in those threads to straighten those people out? Why do you appear only in the Nanjing threads to argue with a passion that the Chinese are hypocritical to protest the Japanese? Who is the real hypocrite here?

no one is questioning japanese culture bc its cool as heck. they gave us the play station! :D

i think most westerners dont see that other asian countries are angry about japanese actions and subsequent denial of those actions.

every country has done shady things in the past. but they have owned up to their actions. where as japan continues to live in denial and has actually taken strides to rewrite history.

There are a couple of key differences, one that Mao mostly did it to his own people while the Imperial Japanese did it to others. That still doesn't justify what the Japanese did. The argument that well its hypocritical of the Chinese to criticize the Japanese when they celebrate Mao is letting the Japanese off the hook and essentially blaming the victim. While yes Mao did a lot of terrible things and history should account for that but at the same time Mao and the Japanese attrocities aren't directly related.

The other part about this is that the Japanese whitewashing history isn't only a Chinese vs. Japanese issue.

Koreans, Philipinos, Malaysians, Burmese, Western POW's and many many others who were brutalized by the Japanese also don't like that recent Japanese governments have been whitewashing their history. Yet this issue is always played up as, well the PRC are hypocrites, whenever this issue arises. This issue spans far more than the PRC but concerns the rest of Asia and anyone who suffered under the heal of the Japanese Imperial Army.

    true, china is no saint.

but it isnt just china who has a beef w/ japan's actions and their subsequent denials. pretty much every other asian nation (other than taiwan) has an issue w/ japan.

also, several western nations such as great britain, austrailia, netherlands, and US can attest to the brutality of japanese actions during ww2. look what they did to the pows.

the incredible thing is that the eye witness accounts (that were used in the book) of the japanese actions came from Nazis.

Actually there are many Taiwanese who have a problem with Japan whitewashing its history. The Japanese occupation of Taiwan was brutal too and many Taiwanese women were forced into becoming comfort women. The problem is that there are some Taiwanese nationalist who look to capitalize off of ties to Japan to counter balance the PRC but their opinion isn't universal.

If you only count the deaths by starvation, that would be an accurate description of Mao. You left out all the millions killed by purges, being worked to death in labor camps, etc. Killing 10s of millions of people, and then saying it was to help China doesn't make it less bad. Also, the Japanese say they were trying to help China too, does that make it OK? It's alright, just embrace the hypocrisy and complain about the Japanese while making excuses for Mao. Everyone is hypocritical about something.

And of course I don't blame the Chinese for being more angry at the Japanese, I said it was perfectly understandable and that everyone does it. That doesn't make it right.
How is it letting the Japanese off the hook? No one is saying that the Japanese can't be criticized. I am only saying it is hypocritical to criticize the Japanese for enshrining war criminals and then also have a huge shrine to Mao. As for them being directly related, they are both shrines. Also, who cares if they are related?

I am not familiar enough with most of those countries and the way they look at their own histories to speak on it, but I know the US has memorials to many that many people would consider war criminals. As we choose to ignore any kind of international court, it is tough for them to be named as such.

You have basically said every race or nationality of people are hypocritical. Then why do you only jump out to argue with a passion that the Chinese are hypocritical whenever there is a Nanjing thread? No offense but you seem to be the biggest hypocrite among the hypocrites (in your eyes) in this thread.

Traced back in the sense that japanese can be traced back to chinese. Chinese and japanese culture is so different in modern times.

    Hypocritical...

Which is better: Every nation having commited some sort of inhumane crime or actions, and later admitting, apologizing, and making strides to do the right thing in the future....

or, every nation having commited some sort of inhumane crime or actions, never admitting it, never apologizing, and making no strides to do the right thing in the future....

Basically, we learn from our mistakes, as well as those of others. Forgive, move on, and do better in the future.
Just because someone commited a crime, doesn't mean they should NEVER be able to point out someone else's errors.
